Calling Jennifer fries!!!
I am apart of a car seat group on FB. Someone posted a link of a preemie going home and the discussion was about how they had stuff in the car seat that shouldn't have been in there. One lady said she is a NICU nurse and any baby under 3lbs is suppose to be sent home in a car bed? Is this true and if so what is it? I've never heard of this, but I've never had a preemie before either.

My son was a preemie he was 3lbs 5oz he was sent home at 5 lbs in a car bed. I forgot why but it had to do with his breathing

I currently have 2 babies in NICU. Both are under 4 pounds right now. We have been told one of the requirements to go home is that they pass their car seat test. A baby across from one of mine failed her car seat test yesterday. They retried it today and she passed. Car bed isn't even an option for my hospital. They leave in their car seat.

It is true. They are difficult to find in many places though.

Our NICU doesn't send home a baby until they weigh a MINIMUM of 4lb.
I've never heard of or seen a car bed. Sounds crazy. ? (Not saying it's untrue, it just sounds soooo weird!)
Most infant car seats are made for 4lb+.
As PPs stated, baby must pass a car seat test before they are allowed to go home.
Sorry I'm not more helpful. ?

Also, nothing should be in the car seat that the factory didn't include. This includes receiving blankets rolled to prop up baby. It's unsafe and a suffocation hazard.

My son was discharged at 4lbs 2oz and his carseat........ If he didn't pass his car seat test he would of had to go home in a car bed

My dd was 4 weeks early and weighed 7lbs. However, because she was a 36 weeker she had to take the car seat test. She could not keep her pulse ox up which meant she failed and we had a car seat bed to use for a few weeks.

Car beds are a bedlike car seat. They make them and are legal I know here in Canada!
They are used for numerous reason, not just Preemie babies.
I'm unsure of the weight guide, but the hospital where my DD was in the NICU, had them for loan or purchase to parents who needed them. Although rare to be used.

I have heard of it..but not from the hospital or suggested. I think I heard of it for someone going on a plane. My daughter came home from the hospital weighing 3 lbs 7 oz. she had to pass a car seat oxygen test.

My son was almost sent home in one because he failed his car seat test twice. He finally passed the day we got discharged, he weighed 4 lbs 12 oz when we left the hospital.

Never heard of these car beds. Interesting. Our nicu won't send a baby home under 4 pounds either and they have to pass the car seat test regardless.

Its true, my aunt was an ICU and NICU nurse. She's the first person that told me about them

I heard of it ( like pp its not only for weight it also helps with other things), don't know if my son's hospital offered them, he was 5lbs at discharge and for the carseat test my nurse went over car seat safety while waiting

My dd couldn't leave nicu till she reached 4lbs and had to pass the test.

The only time I have seen hospital staff place anything in the car seat with the infant are for those with rare disorders and the seats and inserts are made for that condition. An example I have seen while doing car seat checks was a child who has Fragile X. This car seat was literally like using foam lego blocks around the child in the car seat. Very interesting to see as only the hospitals and parents of these children can properly install and use these.

I'm in Alberta, Canada. I've never heard of a car seat bed. My friend has premies. They've all had to reach the 5Ib min and pass the car seat test.

I bought my sons car bed from the hospital he was born at for around 75 dollars. I had never heard of one before he was born

Our nicu has the same requirements that Jennifer fries' does- I also never heard of a US baby using a car bed.
I worked nicu for a short time. They had to pass the car seat test( put baby in car seat while still attached to continuous monitor to see if they can breathe ok) and no extra stuff in car seat it didn't come with
