@jelly the lady today said that they've had hundreds of people come in trying to get out of their bill for different reasons like one dude flat out said he owed his dealer and couldn't pay.... so she said that a lot of them are just in a bad mood from it lol. Which I understand working with the public is super frustrating but that doesn't mean you get to be rude. Oh well.

@pp, my BIL did help last month but I got ahold of a nice lady at the power company who said she'd help and set it up on payment plans. I guess I just got a grumpy old lady the first time.

Hey, unfortunately that was my post. I am in TN and it isn't illegal to shut off utilities here. I got it straightened out though. Thanks for anyone who was concerned!

I'm in Nebraska and I'm pretty sure you can get out of a shut off with a doctors note saying someone in the house needs the electricity for health reasons, but I don't think it's illegal to shut off.

I’m in Arkansas and it’s not illegal to turn power or gas off. It doesn’t matter what the temperature gets to. There is a girl I work with that had hers shut off last week because she couldn’t afford to pay the $200 to keep it on. If you get more than a month behind, it’s off. It’s been getting in the 30’s here at night and she has a 4month old.

I believe in her original post she said that they received help from her BIL to pay it.

I've never heard of shutting off power being illegal.

I really hope she got it sorted I’m in uk and it’s against the law to shut it off with younger children I think it’s under 5 and over 65s and obviously the winter months, we have all got behind on our bills but I would have thought she could at least get into a payment plan with the company
