@Maddz that's what we do with Kinleigh is offer her a toy.....she isn't to big on her binky only when tired and once she's sleeping she spits it out and even then she doesn't always use it to go to sleep.....I try not to force it on her because I know they are hard to get rid of as well.....my oldest I had such a hard time getting her off the binky.... I think it's just hard to keep their fingers out of their mouths because we can't keep eyes on the 24/7 like when we are cleaning or washing dishes u know so it's hard
I'm definitely assuming it's because of teething not sure if it rubbing against it makes the gums feel better....I don't want a thumb sucker either because what it did to my sister.....she uses her binky but not often she usually spits it out after a little while so if she's not going to take it I try not to force it and maybe offer her a toy she can chew on.....ugh it's so hard especially cause their little and everything goes in the house her hands are always in her mouth.....like I said not so much the thumb all the time but she does sneak it in every once and awhile......maybe try giving her a toy when she does it so she gets used to not putting her thumb in her mouth???
Jess - I'm with you with the two fingers. Zaman does it mostly when he's hungry or sleepy with the thumb sucking otherwise he just stares at his hands. I've all but given up on the pacifier. He hates it. We just try to distract him at this point with toys. I was a thumb sucker as a baby/toddler. I had awful teeth. Had to get braces. But turns out I had a small jaw and more teeth so would've been messed up. Thumb sucking or not.
@blessingzz I know I know!!!! It's difficult to stop. I had a girl on my bus and she was 12 sucking her thumb. My son's teeth are outward and curved. It will affect their whole pallet (spelling??) The roof of their mouth too.
My mom said they got me to stop as a toddler by putting salt on my thumb...said that worked. My son's too old for that now. I'm told it's a psychological thing and they need to come to terms with it themselves, that's why if they had a soother for years you can have a "throw away celebration" by age 3-4 and they participate and can let it go...but you can never throw away that thumb so the habit exists its temptation.
@Jess maybe their only doing it cause they're teething? I noticed she's been extra growly and twisting her mouth and sucking her thumb...it may just be a teething thing. I think we're doing the right thing by taking it out and putting the soother in...at least when they're older your can throw out the soother. I wouldn't be this picky about it but I am now because I see what it's doing to my son as a 6 year old and I wish I could go back and change it for him.
@shari aww they do look sooo cute but I understand even though its cute its a hard habit to get them out off, my 6 year old daughter sucks her thumb n please if you find a solution please message me I've tried everyyything too.
My 4 month old was doing the same even from on my scan pictures but luckily we gave her dummy and she's taken it even though she will suck her fingers and thumb but only because of her gums not because of having the habit.
Its really hard especially now that my 6 year is getting adult teeth I really wanted her to stop before then but she's not letting go. I wish I gave her dummy but didn't because I thought it was cute and my daughters mouth has definitely changed her teeth are starting to arch its so sad to see.
You're right not much you can do..let go and let be...just sucks it does such damage to their teeth, my son's teeth are already sticking out...feel bad for him. I'll still see if I can stop her from this habit forming early on, hopefully it works
I did everything in my power to not have this happen. I bought a soother and used it early on. All along she's been taking the soother until the past few days she's been taking the soother out and putting in the thumb ((notice the soother laying on her chest)).
My 6 year old still sucks his thumb, it's such a bad habit to stop. We've tried so hard to help him stop and at one time he stopped for 6 months but started again. We encouraged him by paying him and he started saving money towards a toy everyday he went without sucking his thumb, but that failed and nothing worked so far, and now that he's in school some children are making fun of him and he came home crying...not to mention the bad impact it has on his teeth already. Our dentist recommended we have him stop by the time he started school...I know it looks cute seeing a baby suck their thumb but there's nothing cute about a 6, 7, 8, 9 year old doing it. When he was a baby we didn't stop him because we thought it was so cute...learned our lesson. With this one we'll definitely do our best to stop her before it forms into a habit. I have friends who son had major dental work at age 10...we want to avoid this for sure.
I have no problem with Parker sucking his thumb. It helps him out himself to sleep and he's recently been refusing a paci. I'm probably going to start weaning him around 1.5 to 2 if he hasn't done it himself
