EIF - Echogenic Intracardiac Focus
EIF - Echogenic Intracardiac Focus
We had our anatomy scan last night and all went week except that they saw a "shadow" on baby girl's heart. I believe the medical term is EIF or Echogenic Intracardiac Focus. My doctor said it's a marker for Downs; however, no other markers were found. She also said between that and my quad results, which were approx 1:2,500, I have nothing to worry about. But how can I not worry?!? Any other mommies dealing with this or have experience with it in a previous pregnancy? I'm trying not to stress, but it's absolutely terrifying to think she may have an issue with her heart!

My baby had this on the first anatomy scan that i had, i ended up needing a second because she wouldn't cooperate the first time around and let the tech get all the measurements he needed. It was gone when we had the second.
Apparently it's a common anomaly and usually disappears sometime by the third trimester.
If they were concerned, the doctor would've referred you for a fetal electrocardiogram, which is essentially a high definition ultrasound of baby's heart. My son was born with extensive heart disease and they referred me for one immediately with him.
I honestly wouldn't worry at all, it'll likely be gone the next time you have an ultrasound.

Both my boys had this and it was nothing. They are fine and it went away.

My last pregnancy my son had that. By 3rd trimester it was gone. I was all stressed and worried when I first found out but I promise you most of the time it's nothing and will just go away. I think your LO will be just fine.

^^pp, look at the bright side, at least you get to see your baby again AND have a chance to get in there and really look. We don't get another ultrasound :( I wish you luck though!

An EIF has nothing to do with the function of the heart, it's just a soft marker. My baby has it too, but my Dr isn't concerned since there are no other markers suggesting any chromosomal abnormalities. An EIF is usually a benign finding.
