Nursing troubles ..
Does anyone else's LO only nurse during letdown ?? He will suck long enough to get my letdown started, nurse during that and then want nothing more to do with it after letdown Is done.. This is maybe 5 min on each boob.. He does this all day long and I'm concerned he's not getting enough. He grew two inches from 2 months to 4 but only gained 1 lb 13 oz.. The only time he nurses longer is when I "dream feed" twice during the night.
@penneflower ya he has been teething and has had a low grade fever for over a week so I was wondering if that had something to do with it
@penneflower Ya he's having about 6-7 a day. The first three are always soaked (night feedings) and then the next 3-4 are enough to make the line turn blue on the pampers diapers but not soaked. I'm gonna call the lactation consultant Monday I guess
No he didn't follow the growth curve at all. He went from the 50th for weight to the 28th and the 50th for length to the 75th. I'm going back to the doctor for a weight check at 5 months. It's really stressing me out but I keep trying to offer him the breast more often and he will only eat every 3 hours and for only 10 min max at a time. I have tried pumping but he will not take a bottle.. Never has. I've tried about 15 different bottles. I don't nurse my babe to sleep anymore. But I do get him up twice during the night to feed because if I didn't he would sleep right through.
My sons pediatrician said that some babies are just efficient. Is it possible that he is dream feeding longer because he is also comfort nursing? Babies should usually gain 1-2 lbs per month for the first 6. He gained almost 2 lbs in 2 months, so that's almost on the lower end. Is he following his growth curve? My son actually gained about the same amount from 2-4 months, and I was pretty concerned, but the pediatrician was not. He is only in the 24th percentile for weight, and 86th for height. He's just a peanut I guess. I would talk to your pediatrician about it.
Have you tried expressing ? And bottle feeding it to him ? If he is only having short feeds chances are that he won't be getting the 'hind ' full fat milk . Try talking to your health visitor/doctor , they will probably put you in touch with lactation consultant . :/ sorry I can't be of more help . Do you have a forceful let down ? Maybe it's putting him off feeding for longer ?
Lactation consultant is a great idea if your concerned. My little guy is the same. Night feedings are longer. I'm always half awake so I never know if he sleeps for part of it and wakes up because I'm moving or what.
My little guy has had a rough run at nursing, so I totally understand your concern. The plus side is doctors are free here so use them if you need to. Same with lactation consultants (depending on the area you live).
But I must say my little guy nurses for about 5mins most days. Sometimes 10 mins. He is also started major teething this week (drooling, fingers in mouth, biting, sucking on his tongue, lots of bubbles). Plus I can see the top ridges of teeth.
*hugs* but if your concerned, mama knows her baby best, and don't hesitate to call in some help.
