Etiquette question

My husband has been staying with family friends for the last 3 weeks while we make this transition to California. He will be leaving in another 2 weeks and we have been trying to decide what to do for them as a thank you for their hospitality to him. I thought a gift card and/or cash would be appropriate, but I don't know how much to give. Any ideas on an appropriate amount? Is it tacky to give cash? Would a gift card be better?

But they may not cash the cheque. A gift card will be lost money if they don't use it.

Or a basket. If they love coffee, an espresso maker (stovetop), nice coffee and cups.

Give a gift card for a restaurant for a date night as well as one for gas or groceries. Leave it somewhere they will find it with a thank you note.

A gift card is harder to refuse than cash. My family never accepts cash, but gift cards they can't say no to because you went out of your way to get it.

I would give a gift card to a nice restaurant with enough money for an appetizer, meal, dessert, and a few drinks.

It depends... Do you think they need cash? Or could use it? Then give cash. If they aren't in need of it, give a personalized gift.

I like the idea of something from our new town...I'll have to think about that a little more.

And Amber, I actually thought about sending something after he left or having him leave it in the room he's sleeping in so they find it later!

I would send a check with a nice thank you card to them after he leaves so they can't give it back lol

Send something personal to go with the gift card, something from your new town that's special. Is there something in your new town that's known as the best ____? A distillery or vineyard maybe? Fancy candy or candles or whatever cool local famous thing that they might like.

A gift certificate to their favourite restaurant and a bottle of wine.

That's a good idea as well. I'm sure they would put either kind of gift card to good use.

How about like a visa gift card that they can use anywhere?

If you think they might refuse cash, I would go with a gift card. You can't refuse that :p

Poe:you don't feel cash is tacky or impersonal? I don't want to be tacky and I also don't want to run the risk of them refusing the cash (which they are very likely to do because of who they are as people).

I would get one of those no fee gift cards so they could use it how they would like.

Thanks, ladies. I agree with the gift card as well-my husband was leaning toward cash so they could put it toward utilities, etc. that he's been using while there.
