weaning to cows milk
Dd will be 1 on Sunday and I'm pretty nervous about weaning to just cows milk and meals. She still doesn't eat that much (imo) and i worry she won't get enough nutrients. She's growing but petite for her age. And she still wakes for a feeding (3-5oz) at night.
DS will be 1 at the end of the month and I plan on giving him solid food and then a bottle/sippy with formula. Currently it's been formula then food. Once he's eating more and drinking less we're going to switch to the toddler formula and almond/coconut/cow milk but neither exclusively. Hoping it works!
I started mixing in cows milk the day after his first birthday. At first I did 75% formula and 25% milk just to see how he'd do. He kept doing great with it and he was fully transitioned to cows milk within less than a week after his birthday. Now he's almost three and he still loves cows milk. He'd chug a gallon in a couple of days if I let him.
When I started the switch with my daughter we did one bottle a day of whole milk. I tried to not use her nighttime bottle just because I didn't want her to not sleep or get an upset stomach. Luckily she tolerated it fine and it was like there was no change. I did warm it a little though because she was particular about the temp of her bottles.
Part of the problem is i can't tell if she's being picky or if she's just not hungry. There seems to be at least one good meal a day that she'll eat *a lot*. She eats what we eat. She's never been a fan of baby food.
I don't remember how many bottles a day my daughter went to when formula was cut completely, but if you feel there's not enough nutrients in her diet there's also a toddler formula (I think similac is go to grow or something) To start switching to milk I would sub out one formula feeding a day to regular milk. Then I slowly changed to two milk bottles. My pediatrician said there's no rush so even if she has formula a while after she turns one it's fine. Maybe focus on trying to add more meals in for her first? If she's picky try looking at some baby food recipes my daughter didn't like too many jarred foods I used to only make fresh food for her. Good luck!
I weaned to cows milk slowly over time. She had 6 ounce bottles at the time, so I did one ounce cows milk/5 ounces breast milk for a week, then two ounces cows milk/4ounces BM for a week, and slowly increased by one ounce every week until she was completely cows milk.
