My dd is 2 and speaks a lot, not always understandable, and she still signs. We started with milk, food, more and all done. Her daycare taught her Please. We stopped after that because she started talking and most of dd's frustrations were around food.

I did it with my son and he was a very early talker. It's so cute to watch him teach his newborn sissy how to sign.

@lil-lass, the Baby Signing Time videos really helped us. The first one has a lot of basic need signs. There was something about seeing the other babies do it, that pulled Dd in.

Consistency is everything. I've read a LOT of books and gone for many wagon rides over the past two months. ?

@caw I've been meaning to learn a second language for when i eventually go back to work (in a year or so) and I've always wanted to learn ASL. I figured why not do dd a favor and teach her as well.

We are doing full ASL. It's part of our school. Is another language we are teaching our children

I literally meant to post about this earlier today and forgot! ???

My lo is 15 months and mostly nonverbal. He can sign "milk", "more", and "all done". It is really helpful!!

I want to try to teach him some more signs. Does anyone have any good resources?

I didn't do full on. Dd knows - eat, more, all done, book, friend, milk, juice, water, thank you, please, mother, bubbles and a couple others.

She is 19 months old and doesn't take.

We didn't go full on. But we taught both ours enough functional words to keep down the frustration. Food, drink, hungry, please, more. My almost 5yo still uses it occasionally.

Wow i was not expecting so many replies! Awesome! Is it basically full ASL?

I do it with my 14 month old. The only two signs she'll do is 'more' and 'all done', but that's fine with me because she already has a pretty large vocabulary for her age. I find that it limits some of her outbursts.

I just started signing and teaching her milk ??✊???✊?

She is 3 months old. No progress yet but I would love to learn more. I'll definitely be looking into it

It's also been great because we are teaching Hebrew and using a sign with the word in both languages helps it sick

I have with all my children. It's been great. I then started watching baby signing time with them and now signing time.

Yes and now she knows majority of the language.

We are! She turns a year next week and we've been signing for around 2 months. We only do the basics, but it helps so much. She just woke up from a nap and asked to go for a wagon ride; when I told her we couldn't (it's getting dark), she demanded milk and goldfish. ?

She knows and uses appropriately: book, more, eat, drink, cereal, cracker, banana, milk, wagon, brush [your] teeth

**this is the order she learned them

She also knows: bath and all done, but doesn't use them unless prompted.

I love being able to communicate with her. ? She's so proud of herself. When she meets someone new, she starts signing random things to them, like, "look what I can do!"

We do it. It helps tremendously and I'm so proud when Dd picks up a new sign. It's easy to learn and teach but it does take some patience.

We will. DH is fluent in ASL and for my early childhood degree I had to take classes in Baby Sign Language.

PP, where have you heard that it caused the infant to talk later? I have never heard that or experienced it.

I started classes with DD at 4 months, she started signing back to me by 9 months. It was super helpful and I would recommend it to everyone.

I intend to do it when my baby is born. It will most likely mean the baby speaks later, but will be able to communicate with us a lot sooner, and in the long run speech development is not affected.

Are you also planning on doing EC (elimination communication)?

I do it. It's great! It allows my son to communicate and he picked it up really easily. He didn't start really talking until recently (19 months) so it was very helpful for us.
