VITAMIN D drops

Our pedi today told us our 1mo old should be on vitamin d drops if she's on only breastmilk... Not like a prescription just OTC. But she said one eyedropper full a day. That seems like a lot for a 9 pound baby... Plus I thought she gets all her vitamins from my breastmilk?

Yes Vitamin D gets passed through breastmilk. As another poster stated, most people are deficient hence introducing baby to drops. I did Prenatals (still do as I'm still breastfeeding) along with 5,000 IU of D daily. I still gave my LO Carlson's drops because we did not take her out much and she was born at the beginning of winter.

Her pediatrician only ever seen one case of Vitamin D deficiency and that was in a baby who lived up north.

I also just took it myself and passed it to my son through breastmilk at the instruction of my doctor. It worked best for us - I didn't have to worry about giving him drops. I took 5,000 IUs daily while breastfeeding in addition to my prenatal.

This article shares the results of a study that shows the mother can increase her intake as a way to effectively increase the amount of vitamin D in her breastmilk to recommended levels.

I noticed tummy troubles when she started. Turns out the ones I bought at a local drugstore had corn oil in them. I did not realize there may be other ingredients in them. I was pissed. Dd had reflux issues and we didn't need more issues.

Anyway, our naturopathic doctor gave me a pure vitamin d. It has d3 on the bottle. D3 is better.

These are the ones we used and still do.

Vitamin d is the only vitamin they don't get we live in Arizona so my sons pediatrician said it wasn't needed since we're exposed to so much sun here

I bought the Zarbees kind. They are super concentrated, unlike some of the others I looked at. It's a tiny syringe.

Yep. It's standard here (northern Canada)

Thank you everyone I guess I'll follow the box instructions. I'm not sure if it's something that she can get to much of or not... As I live in Florida and the sun is a blazing 85 year round usually.

Our pedi told us 10 minutes out in the sun every day OR vitamin D drops daily. I just give her the recommended dose on the box if we don't go outside that day.

We did the vitamin D as well, as instructed by our pediatrician. The dropper in the ones we had was very small and skinny. It wasn't a lot of liquid.

Noo, even if you were to get a lot of vitamin D doesn't mean she'll get a lot too. If you wanted to skip the drops then the only way to give her a sufficient amount of vitamin D is for her to be outside for a little while everyday. Like a pp mentioned.

So basically I can take a good amount of the vitamin myself and she'll get it indirectly? I kind of like that idea better. I personally feel like a full eyedropper is to much, I did ask if that was a specific amount in case I switch brand later and she said no one eyedropper full regardless of the size...

My pedi told us to get DD vitamin D drops. Breast milk does have SOME vitamin D, just not enough. The reason being is that waaaaaay back when, our ancestors were outside 90% of the time and the direct sunlight, along with the little bit in breast milk gave babes all they needed. Unless you plan on taking your baby outside a lot the drops are pretty much a must! ?

I naturally run super low on vitamin d myself. Ds1 had mild jaundice. Also we live in an area that is notorious for everyone having low vitamin d levels (northern US). So I completely agreed with the doctor on giving the vitamin d drops. I believe it was 10 drops per day. It didn't seem to cause any side affects.

At 1 year the pediatrician said we could stop.

Vitamin D absolutely gets passed through breast milk. The issue is most women are deficcient, therefore unable to pass an adequate amount onto the baby through her milk. If you supplement yourself with at least 3000IU (I take 5000) daily, an adequate amount will transfer to baby.

As far as amount it depends on the concentration you are buying. Check with the pharmacist or read the bottle when you get it.

I did it for both my boys. Apparently we don't produce enough. There was no ill effects from it.

I actually never did use the drops. Since my daughter was born in summer and we were outside alot, she said 10mins of sun was good.

The only vitamin not in breastmilk is vitamin d. You must supplement. Our is the Jaimenson drop bottle. We let out one drop in summer (or go in the sun) and two drops in the winter.

Vitamin D is one of the only vitamins that doesn't really get passed through breast milk. We usually spend time on our back deck in the sun everyday so I skipped the drops. But if you don't have your baby in the sun a lot, then I would
