Is preterm birth hereditary?
Is preterm birth hereditary?
This is definitely something I will be discussing with my Dr. At my next visit but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this? I am the youngest of 3 children and I was born 4 days before my due date so not early but both of my brothers on the other hand were born 5 and 6 weeks early. My moms first was 6 weeks premature and her second was 5 weeks premature, will that put me at a higher risk of preterm labor?

I spoke to my midwife about this because my mum had my brother 3months and 12days premature. I figured it was something I should mention incase it's something that could happen to me but she said it was nothing to worry about and nothing that will affect me x

Thanks for your responses ladies I was starting to worry and my next appointment isn't until July 26th now I don't have to keep worrying until then.

My mom was always over due by a week or more. All mine were early 3-5 weeks. I haven't every heard a reason why but I don't think it's a family trait for us.

I'm going to go with no.
My mom had all of us early (but two sets of twins, so that's normal) and I had my son 10 days late.

I don't think it is a hereditary thing but if you have already had a baby that was preterm your chances of having another preterm baby is higher than a woman who has not delivered preterm. They say nothing to do with labor and delivery is hereditary but my daughter went into distress during labor just like I did and almost needed to be delivered via emergency c-section where as i was delivered emergency c-section. The same thing happened when she was in labor with my brother but he was already to far in the birth canal to do a c-section so I think maybe me and my mom just suck at having babies. Hopefully this one will go much better and I can put it to pure coincidence and enjoy my birth experience.
