Home birth advice

Hi. I am almost 35 weeks with my 2nd baby. Since before this baby was conceived I have wanted a home birth. At my 12 week appointment with the consultant she said I could as long as I didn't gain much weight (BMI was 36), GTT negative and bloods were stable (I have a blood disorder). So now at 34+5 I am LIGHTER than my 12 wk appt, GTT was negative and bloods are stable (almost pre pregnancy levels) so yesterday I had a pre planned scan and consultant appointment to which I was expecting her to give me the go ahead for the home birth. My midwife is supporting me and I am a nurse so I am going into this with my eyes open of the risks. Then wham the consultant says no purely on my BMI. To which I argued with her that you cannot accurately calculate a BMI on someone who is 34 wks pregnant!! Anyway my midwife has said that she will still support my decision to have a home birth as the doctor couldn't give a good enough reason to stop it. I guess what I am asking is if there is anybody who has been in the same situation before? My partner is fully supporting my choice. Sorry for the long rant xx

Thank you ladies. I am not having a home birth. I had zero support from the medical team or the midwives so I am going to have a hospital birth which is against everything that I want. I am really fed up now and just want my baby here, as long as it enters the world safely and healthily then thats the main thing. Just feel defeated and let down by the professionals. If I decide to have another baby I will be making sure my BMI is well below 35 before conception so they can't give me the same bull s*** again!! Thank you for your support xx

There's a group on Facebook called home birth uk add them they are really really helpful! I didn't get my homebirth due to raised blood pressure in labour but fingers crossed for you xx

The cut off for homebirth being 'against medical advice' is normally either 30 or 35 AT BOOKING! If you are under a consultant for any reason you are classed as 'high risk' and that would indicate that a homebirth would be against advice! Raised bmi does increase your risk of haemorrhage and certain other things. HOWEVER... Their job is not to tell you what you can or can't do: it is to give you the full info about what the potential risks are and why they would advise for you to deliver In hospital, so you can make an informed choice!! Do what you feel comfortable doing! Fingers crossed for a lovely homebirth for you!!!!

Legally you have the right for a home birth. It's purely your choice. I had one and it was amazing x

Hi there, have you had any feedback. I am only 16 weeks with my second but my midwife has suggested homebirth and I'm warming to the idea. My BMI 35 atm, and I will have the glucose test which I hope will be fine! I have also lost weight whilst being pregnant due to food aversions but I am aware that could change, I didn't realise bmi was a factor that could affect homebirth?

I had a homebirth with my 4th against consultant advice because my 3rd pregnancy was complicated and ended in a premature delivery. I had full support from my midwife and my lo was born at home after a very quick but amazing labour. If you have any questions, feel free to pm x

Thank you for your reply. I just feel really defeated. I dont want to go against medical advice but looking at the whole picture and how my last pregnancy, labour and birth were complication free I just feel that saying my BMI is 1 over (cut off is 35) even though I am lighter now is not a good enough reason. If she said that it was because there was a higher risk of me needing a blood transfusion for example then that would be a far more acceptable reason. I just don't know what to do now. I need to wait until I see my regular midwife on Thursday and chat to her I think. Thank you. Xx

Not with the weight, but I'm asthmatic, history of epilepsy and a heart murmur and I still had my home birth with my 5th, as long as you are aware if necessary, ie any complications (stress, dvt ect)you will need to go to hospital, this happened in 3rd and 4th births, also your baby can't weigh less than 5lb 6oz at birth at home otherwise will need to be rushed to hospital too, my 5th was 5lb13 and both midwifes said any smaller and she would of needed nicu. Good luck Hun, you will be in good hands whatever you decide xx
