I don't think she gets it.
I swear sometimes I just need to renew my policy to not look at the comments in Facebook. I never used to. I don't know why I started. But the ignorance is real.
I'll share an example where I witnessed a friend of mine that experienced something while I was with her:
I was at the market with my friend and her son. The boy had found a squirt gun I had thought I hid well in my closet. I told him he could have it if his mom said it was alright; he had it inside the store while we shopped. I kept making western movie references and he'd laugh at them.
We went to check out and I was putting the groceries onto the conveyer belt. I saw as he was pointing the blaster at magazines and asking his mom questions, the lady behind us said, "now don't you point that at me, young man. That's how it all starts." I stopped putting our groceries on the belt. I looked at the woman. Nervous, my friend blushed and resumed loading up the belt. I kept my stare on the woman, even as I paid, thanked the cashier, and stood there bagging the woman's things.
She asked me nervously why I am staring at her. I simply replied, "apologize." "For what? To who? I did nothing wrong." I pointed at my friend and then to her son. "Apologize." She asked what she had done and I told her "your commentary. 'That's how it all starts.' Apologize." By now, there were people looking at her, and their faces turned to shock when I quoted her. She sincerely apologized and hurried out of the store.
I didn't need to shout, I didn't need to swear, and I was able to convey to her that what she said was wrong and demanded, peacefully enough, she righted what she did wrong. This served as a public lesson of "dealing with certain people 101".
I think what pp was saying was more a reference to the cultural history as opposed to the actual color of her skin. Like guilt by association kind of thing.
I would also like to say as the mother of a child with autism this video truly disturbed me to the point that I feel physically sick. It brought me to tears. The four that committed this crime are sick twisted animals and I hope they spend a very long time rotting in jail for what they've done. My heart breaks for this boy and his family.
First I would like to say I'm nit racist in the least. Part of my family is African American and mixed race. Everyone in my family is raised to believe there is good people and bad people end of story. I've seen my family get called the N word. Hell two of my cousins grew up in an area where they were the only people that weren't white. They went to their school bus stop one morning and there was a dead raccoon nailed to the tree. I know racism exists. I also know that it works both ways. For example I was working a shift about a year ago (I work in ems) I was very pregnant with ds2. Got called to go to the police barracks to access someone that had been tasered during arrest and to check the arresting officer. The person arrested had been caught actively committing an assault. The person assaulted had to be taken to the hospital from the scene due to truly severe injuries. The suspect began to fight the officer hence the taser. So we get there and the officer was talking to his CO so my partner and I were showed to the suspect first. Hooked up to the heart monitor, checked for injuries etc and all clear. Told the officer that was standing behind me. Suspect proceeded to attempt to attack me and was screaming "white trash w**** I'll kill you and that baby you cracker b**** !" My African American partner didn't get attacked. Luckily guy was cuffed to a bench and I saw him coming, the officers got him under control quickly. There's been many occasions where I've been called these names and many others. I always treat my patients with respect and give them all the best care that I can regardless of situation, race, beliefs etc. even the ones that were truly horrible people. These names are just as much racial slurs as the N- word and any other racial slur against any other ethnic group. Somehow so much of society doesn't recognize this.
Yes there is white privilege. There is also a double standard in some things. All black colleges, all black beauty pageants, black only scholarship etc. if there were white only of the same things that's considered wrong. I think overall there is getting to be a culture of "I'm a victim". Bad life experiences do not justify doing bad things. "Someone hurt me or someone I love" is not an excuse to attack others. It's not a justification for poor choices. I was abused by my sperm donor. I don't use it as an excuse, never have and never will. I am responsible for myself and my decisions. I don't lash out at others, I don't blame anyone but the one who did it.
In both cases the mentally disabled suffered. In both cases the mentally disabled are now traumatized. Simple.
Now for the privilege misconception, not all are born into privileges of being "white". At the same time, not all "white" people put themselves into a situation for the outcome to be in their favor.Example, being in line at the market.
Yes, in my personal life I've experienced behavior that made me wonder "why did this person just say/do that". I was at the WIC office and the area I'm in has a mixture of races and cultural backgrounds. I was getting my paperwork in order, decided to sit down and play with my son instead. I heard someone say, "why is she even here? She white, she don't need WIC. She's stealing from the system." I meet the criteria. If I feel we could use the extra help, for the sake of my children's health, I'm going to do it.
Gotcha. I couldn't watch the whole thing because my wifi is not liking to stream cramp today.
How about a young special needs man was attacked by four savages! Why does it matter if it was black or white. I think the media is the biggest pot stirrer in the world right now. They have a agenda to get a story and get views. They need people to get riled up so they will continue to have "news" to report!
I'm sorry Hershey but just because there are some advantages given to some of a minority's race does not fully erase everything else. Everyone deserves a fair shake, yes, and to coddle anyone would be terribly insulting, but that does not negate the whole other side of that coin. As I said in the op, I've visible seen examples of white privilege happen. It does exist.
That was part of the gist of the whole post. That this lady had the gall to say the fact this monstrosity occurred meant that white privilege was a fake. I'm not quite sure why she took it there either.
And it's kind of a world-wide issue (racism), definitely not one unique to the US
I don't think anyone's saying that America is a horrible place to live necessarily. It's just that some people choose to be willfully and woefully blind to the issues we do have and those issues can't be made better if people ignore them.
Point me out any society that is perfect out there. I wish there was a perfect world where we all hold hands despite color and religious beliefs.
But for now, in this imperfect country called America, I like my privileges here. My family has opportunites here. There is a reason many immigrants and beliefs flock here. Pointing out silly things such as "white" this or whites have that is another way of racism. People can't help they are white ?. Like I said in a previous post, white babies born are the minority. In our future, or at least in our kids future, you are seeing a big shift in demographics. Whites will no longer be the majority.
If this place is so terrible why do we still have many trying to get in?
@hershey, I don't think they were ever on ?
My best friend from when I was roughly 4 or 5 is affro Caribbean, my niece is half Asian, my cousins are mixed, I just never have and never will treat anybody differently because of the colour of their skin
I would much rather save my batch energy for the arse holes in life ?? x
No I wasn't very clear. When I shorten it to privilege I mean specifically white privilege but I'm a lazy typer ?
Her comment was one of a couple basically following the lines that this crime was a further illustration that white privileges is made up.
I'm not sure what you're trying to get at Hershey. I don't know if I'm missing something honestly (wouldn't put it past me lol)
The crime had nothing to do with white privileges. And imho the racist feeling of the assillants is very evident and the crime monstrous.
The gist of my post though wasn't so much about the crime as it was about some ignorant white woman claiming that white privileges does not exist because she works hard. (This was a comment she made not me)
So I guess I'm a bit confused what your question is.
No this crime wasn't an instance of white privilege, but the fact it occurred doesn't negate the fact that privilege exists.
I'm sorry (not sorry) but I am one of those who choose not to acknowledge it, it doesn't effect me or my friends/family that are of different race, it doesn't interest me, I certainly do not feel 'privileged' or 'lucky' to be white, I am just me ?♀️
Sometimes ignorance is bliss, if more people took this as their view then maybe there wouldn't be so much crap on the subject
I have to agree. It's one thing to acknowledge that privilege exists. It's very real and completely unfair. That doesn't mean every white person perpetrates it or that anyone should be ashamed because of the level of melanin in their skin or what their ignorant ancestors did. That's swinging the pendulum too far. But I do feel we all have a responsibility to recognize it when it tears it's ugly head and fight it in whatever manner we can.
@fingers...And there it is. Exactly what I'm talking about. Just because you're people have suffered doesn't mean, someone else's aren't currently suffering. No ones suffering outweighs anyone else's. there is a group of people who are asking for support, and there's a bunch of people with there fingers in their ears going "lalala I can't hear you lalala I've suffered too lalalala I refuse to acknowledge racism and privilege in the slightest lalala"
There's a difference between bringing light to White Privilege, (even though I don't personally agree with it) but to make someone feel bad for being 'privileged'. None of us picked our race, so instead of battling each other on who has it worse, who's been through the worst, or who has the most struggles, let's realize there's privilege all around us, we are all privileged, were human and alive and as far as I'm concerned, I'm privileged to be alive and to be a mom. ??
Honestly, I've never really understood the whole racist thing, I don't look into meanings or consequences, I don't get into politics or immigration or any of that crap, in my eyes we are just us ✊?
To me there is no difference between black white mixed or whatever colour you are, and thats the way I will be keeping my perfect little world ??
I think sometimes being white you don't even realize you have a privilege here, because you have never had to live in the eyes of another race. I didn't realize it myself until blm. It really opened my eyes to what actually happens in this country. How blessed I am to be able to walk into a gas station and not be followed around. I thought that was just an American privilege for a long time. Now I know better. It makes me really sad. I feel a certain "guilt" being a white woman living in America. I have a privilege that I never asked for and other races have to fight for the rights I automatically have. I feel ashamed to be white sometimes, because of the terrible things our ancestors have done to this country. Maybe it's just me, but I hate being white sometimes becuase of the terrible history we have. The horrible, disgusting things our ancestors have done.. the things people still do today. I hate it.
Don't worry so much ladies. White babies being born are already dropping to a point that by 2020 they will be a MINORITY of the babies born. Population is becoming very mixed right now. My husband is white but I am not. Our babies will be mixed. Our babies will most likely breed with more mixed people.
I have been to the Middle East and South America and many other countries. I consider it a privilege to be an American. Simple as that.
I know. It just never ceases to amaze me the justification or reasoning people put forward for their ideas.
A monster is a monster regardless of race. It just kinda sick we live in a world where this not only occurs, but is recorded and posted as if it's entertainment. I'd have hoped (not realistically expected unfortunately) that as a society we would outgrow that kind of voyeuristic violence.
Yesterday I went out with my boyfriend went to watch a movie, me and him don't live together yet. but point is yesterday when he was dropping me off his like sleep over at my house witch the mom and dad lives. I said no,
his response was why is everyone deciding or making choices for you and their going to do the same with the baby, when I know that's not true. what he thinks is that my mom tells me not to sleep over. So he left all mad. and I felt in my heart that he went on and cheated on me...
This for the moms that don't like what I post don't comment
some girls should shut the hell up .. they always say if you don't have something nice to say then don't say it ! I hate judgmental people with closed minded views .
I don't care what ppl think of me, but I'm seriously considering putting my baby up for adoption. I love her with all of heart, but doing this alone is hard. Every single night she just screams to the top of her lungs and I do everything to soothe her. I don't know what to do at all. I wish I had some kind of help. I don't have a single ounce of help. I don't know a single soul in Minnesota either.
I don't smoke weed. So I guess I will never understand. But I'm not sure why people smoke weed when they're pregnant!
It's a fact that my friend's boy never pointed the toy at her. Never. He was using the toy as a pointer while he was asking his mom questions about the magazine pictures while waiting in line.
The lady made it a point to make a comment to make the mom, and maybe even myself, feel bad about allowing the boy play with a toy gun, and bring it into the store.
Last, of course we would have taken the toy away if we noticed him pointing it at anyone, including ourselves. Throughout the store he had the toy in his hands, pointed down at the floor, or in his "holster", because I'd tell him to "holster it" while we were in an aisle with lots of people. Customers actually thought it was cute how he would laugh like he was watching his favorite comic every time I used a line from a western.
