How do you deal with smokers?
My sisters' husbands are both smokers and I know that when I have the baby and they visit, they're going to want to hold him/her. But in my baby care class they said to make sure a smoker is wearing a clean shirt before holding the baby. I'll do what I have to do- but how do I ask them if they've smoked in the shirt they're wearing without sounding like "that crazy first time mom"?

Wondering the same. Plus when it's your Husbands mother who smokes.... How do you approach it without sounding rude to the grandma ahhhh. Been freaking

Oh no, no smokers are holding my newborn. My friend gives a blanket to cover your shirt with when someone, anyone holds her babies. Bc of perfumes, and lotions being irritating to babe. Maybe try that?

Also, put hand sanitizer right in their hands. The chemicals stick to smokers' hands.

It'll smell like fresh smoke. My SO mom smokes and he smokes. I can always tell

Its not crazy to want to protect your child. Smokers breath out harmful chemicals for up to 3 hours after they smoke. The chemicals attach to their clothes and hair and skin. It's really not adorable. I can't believe I used to do that to myself. I would make them put on a big clean tshirt before the hold the baby, wash their hands up the the elbows and not get in the babies face.

It's not rude to protect you child as it has been stated before. I have asthma now because of second hand smoke. With my first, no one that smoked held him. I will do the same with this one. If smoking is more important than so be it.
Good luck!!!

My boss is a smoker, he was the only person I couldn't say anything to, as he was great to me during my pregnancy and after. ( he is paying me my full time wages, whilst I'm only working 3 days a week and allows me to work from home. )
So the day he came to visit my first born, I had my baby in a long sleeve outfit plus swaddled in a blanket completely covered except face, let him cuddle for a few minutes, then politely excused myself and bub and said she needs to eat, so I took her away changed her clothes blanket, nursed her till she slept.

However in your case, as you wil be seeing them regularly you shoul just mention to the guys directly that smoking is baby for bub, and you want them to have a good relationship with their uncles so if you can not smoke directly before a visit

Thanks for the input, ladies. And great idea with the blanket! I definitely won't be letting a fresh smoker hold babe- I was just curious as to the best way to broach the subject.

I would just be honest with them. My so & his sister smokes & she always wants to hold my baby. I make her take a shower and change clothes, same for my so !
