Fussy and cries when he breast feeds

I'm EBF my 1 month old and have had no issues until yesterday. During the day when I breastfeed him, he gets so fussy, starts crying and eventually pulls off. But he continues to lick his lips and look for my nipple because he's still hungry. Then he starts feeding, calms down, takes a couple of gulps then starts getting fussy again. I think my milk might be coming out too quickly that it aggravates him (sometimes he ends up coughing and looking like he's going to choke). Anyone else experience this and have any tips ?

It's very possible your let down is a bit fast for him. If he unlatches, I believe you would be able to notice though. My baby did/still does this when he's gassy. He nurses out of comfort and will latch, then unlatch repeatedly until he passes gas or falls asleep. If it's too much for you to handle, call your pediatrician, they'll be able to put your mind at ease!

We had the swollen nasal passages issue as well from suctioning after birth. It caused a lot of feeding issues for us. I tried to avoid the bulb syringe unless really needed. Only once or twice a day if he got really snotty. And I always put saline drops first. I also just did saline. You can also put breastmilk in the nose. It's a natural anti-inflammatory. The LC had me try to feed him upright. Because as soon as he laid down he couldn't breathe. It honestly took close to 6 months until his nose grew allowing the passages to get wider.

Thanks for the tips!

@kaymar Is there a way to help with the swelling? I think this may be it because I've tried burping him and unlatching etc and it didn't work.

I'm also going to try and cut down on dairy to see if that could be it.

Sometimes my daughter acts that way when she's not hungry and just wants to suck. She gets aggravated with the milk. I just give her a pacifier. Sometimes that's it and sometimes she needs to burp.

If it's from the flow being to fast you can unlatch him during letdown and just let the spray flow in a cup if you want to keep it or a towel.

Sometimes they latch and unlatch because they are trying to stimulate a letdown. They get annoyed by the slow flow.

And sometimes they just have gas and need to be burped.

Isn't it fun trying to figure out what's happening???

My baby did this when she had a stuffed up nose. At first I didn't know what was going on because there was no mucus just swelling. But she didn't nurse well because she couldn't breath.

Short Luteal Phase?

I've just started temping because I believe that the reason I haven't had a BFP yet, after 20 months, is because I believe I may have a Luteal Phase Defect.

Starting TWW. Anyone else?

I had a stillborn daughter at 38 weeks this passed Nov. This is my second month ttc. (Last month we only tried for like two weeks though). My last and only pregnancy, I got pregnant the first month of ttc so I hope it's quick this time again.

leahbeth I'm so sorry :( hopefully your cycle continues and you get another shot next month.
