pumping help.

So my little guy is still in the Nicu. They don't want to put him to breast yet, cause they are keeping track of every feeding closely and adding powder to increase his calorie intake. What are some good tips to increase milk supply?? Or anything I can take orally?

Drink tons of water (100 oz) and take tons of Fenugreek- it took forever to get my milk supply up. Those were the only things that worked for me.

I would look for a lactation cookie recipe online ad take fenugreek pills They helped me. But in reality it's up to you weather you decide to start breastfeed your little one your supply would probably go up if you had baby trying to nurse also pumping more often may help too and increasing your water intake

Also baby getting directly from breast will get him more milk. Their tummies are tiny 1oz seems great for pumping.

If he was just recently born you won't have a lot of milk. It's normal. Pump constantly even if you feel nothing is coming out. You really don't need anything this soon honestly.

They need to track how much he is digesting that's why no breast. As soon as he is able to try a bottle they will let you try and breast feed. For now just pump as much as you can.

I took mothers love more milk plus supplement. I worked really well. Also stay hydrated and pump every 2-3 hrs.

You can insist he be put to breast before his feeding. Then pump after you put him to the breast. That is going to increase your supply the most.

@allie

I am a NICU RN. If they are allowing him to try to bottle feed at all, they should be allowing him to breastfeed.

He may still need a tube feed immediately after the Breastfeeding if he is sleepy or doesn't do fantastic. Talk to his doctors. If he is bottle feeding even once per day, he should be able to exchange that for a Breastfeeding session instead.

Tons of water, pumping every 2-3 hours, oatmeal, Fenugreek w/Marshmallow or Mothers Milk Tea (I think that's what it's called)

I am pumping every 2 hours. I get about 1 oz per breast. I just feel like it's way to little. He still has a feeding tube and most of his feedings end up going through there in the end.

I would discourage using supplements to increase milk supply unless it is recommended by the lactation consultant. Even though it may not seem like it...you could be producing enough/a normal amount. If you plan to transition baby to the breast you could have issues with over supply making that transition even more difficult.

Fenugreek is a common vitamin people will take to increase supply.

Talk to lactation consultant too. There is a tea, supplements, I've even heard oatmeal. But I would want to have a lactation consultant do recommendations since baby is a preemie. As far as the other stuff, I agree with what ppl have said re skin to skin, and pumping every 2-3 hrs round the clock and being hydrated!!!!

I have heard of a few supplements you can take. I don't know how well they work. Try googling it. Im sure your will find something helpful you can do on top of pumping. Pp are right day and night wake up to pump. The more times you pump now the more your body will know it needs to make more.

Is he bottle feeding at all?

The best way to increase breastmilk supply is to pump or nurse at least every 3 hours around the clock- day and night.

Hold baby skin to skin as often as possible as well.

How often are you pumping/how much are you getting each pumping?

There is no reason for him not to be at the breast. Just because they want to keep track of feedings doesnt seem like a good enough reason and wouldn't fly for me. Just my opinion!
