straight to insulin?
So my doctor called me today and he's not happy with my fasting numbers. He wants me to call and schedule with the fetal maternal medicine doctors tomorrow and get started on insulin. I was just diagnosed last week and have only been testing for 5 days. Sigh...i really thought this time I'd at least get a chance to try and fix it with diet alone, but guess not. If my after meal numbers have been good, do they only have you take the insulin at night then? I'm only 16 weeks, so this is gonna be a loooong pregnancy dealing with this crap...
You can ask to try oral medications first but if that doesn't work I'd just embrace the insulin. The longer and better co trolled your numbers are the healthier your pregnancy and the more likely things will go smoothly. Uncontrolled numbers lead to complications and wide shouldered GD babies leading to csections etc. I had GD that wasn't well managed in my first pregnancy which led to my baby having shoulder dystocia. This time the maternal fetal medicine doctors reluctantly agreed to letting me try oral meds first as long as I agreed to do insulin if that didn't work well. I'm 4 weeks from induction and I'm close to needing the insulin but again I'd rather be on it than have another terrifying delivery or be forced into a c-section.
