Don't feel bad about that! If the paci worked then YOU did console him, apparently that's what he needed. Never feel bad because you need help sometimes, whether that comes from having another helping hand, or using "tools" to get the job done.
I have always offered the paci to my kids in the hospital. 2 out of the 4 hated it and the other 2 loved the paci for a few months. I wouldn't worry about giving the paci too soon. You're not the first or only mom who has given in to the paci.
I never waited a month with my kids. I also exclusively breastfed all three of mine and they would never take a bottle for me. One of mine loved his pack till 18 months and the other for a while. It never cause problems with nursing
Both of my boys got a pacifier at like 2 days old and I exclusively BF them. I nursed them until they were 13 months and other was 15 months. The thing you want to make sure is that you don't put off feedings by using the pacifier. Make are you are feeding every 2-3 hours during the day and no longer than 4 hours at night to keep up your supply! Good luck and don't feel bad, you need to keep your mental sanity!
I always waited a month before introducing a paci and none of my 3 boys ever took it. They also refused bottles until they were past 10 months. There is no perfect way to do things, you just have to do what works for your baby and it sounds like giving him the paci last night worked.
The paci is what helped my son sleep through the night at 5 weeks old. He started taking it instead of feedings. It was wonderful! lol... I gave him the paci at one day old in the hospital. The nurse told me that some babies just need something to suck on. He was chewing on his hand before that so I guess it's true... Don't feel bad at all. It's what works for YOU and not what other people think you should do.
I waited 2 weeks with my last to introduce paci I'll prob do that again. Not saying it's bad you already did at all! But even if your boobs are empty still let baby suck for comfort as it will establish your milk and will help make more.
Don't feel bad! Matt is getting a paci right now too. I figure he was going for his hands so much that I'd rather do the paci than try to break a thumb sucking habit.
In a course I took about a year ago it stated that in a study pacifiers showed to help with the prevention of SID... because it helps the baby to remember to continue breathing. I think that if your child likes it then there is no harm to it, my first born didn't care for it we'll see about Roman in two weeks lol
Maybe that's just what he needed ! No need to feel bad. Pacifiers are actually good for the baby! Just not too much pacifier ! And if he doesn't want that he won't take it.
Some babies just like to suck more to sooth themselves and even use their moms breast as a paci. I gave my babies one at day 1 or 2 and never had a problem with them breastfeeding. I would rather them take that then being on the boob constantly just to calm themselves. I only offer milk every 2-3 hours and if they seem uneasy sooner I will try all other ways first because not every cry is a hungry cry!
Thank you all so much for your responses. I feel so much better now. Everything I read online said to not give it to them until 1 month old. So I was like shoot I messed up.
I just slept with my babies and they would be on the boob when ever they wanted regardless of what others may think me and baby both got better sleep and they both sleep good now at 3 and 1.5 years of age. Sometimes babies just want to be next to mama ..

Thank you for that aking. I keep reading how you shouldn't give them a paci until they're a month old or breastfeeding has been regulated.

If you were falling asleep and you safely consoled your baby.. that's all that matters! Don't be so hard on yourself!

First day home from the hospital I used one at night to get some sleep. I don't feel bad at all. Just limit the use.
