Can I drink wine while Im breastfeeding?
Can I have some wine while breastfeeding? Or will I have to pump and dump? And if so how long after you drink will the alcohol leave your system for your breastmilk to be good again?
If you’re safe to drive, you’re safe to nurse. No need to wait a certain amount of time or pump and dump. Only a small amount of alcohol makes it into your milk and it leaves it like it leaves your blood stream.
The only reason to pump and dump is if you’re drunk and need to relieve engorgement.
I drank wine on Christmas Day. Nursed throughout the day. I never felt buzzed so I never waited to nurse.
I've read that it's about 2.5 hrs per serving of alcohol per hour, so 4oz of wine would be one serving. You don't have to pump and dump unless you are pumping to relieve pressure before your body has filtered it all out. Try timing it where you nurse right before, or pump before you drink and use that to feed baby.
No need to wait. My midwife actually encourages to have a little wine or a beer every now and then. She said it helps filter the kidneys and will help milk production.
