controlling food

At what age do you think parents stop having control over what their children eat?

Комментарии

I usually let DD help with choosing what to eat so she has somewhat of a say. She did inherit my taste buds so she's very picky lol

When she's older though if I choose something and she doesn't like it she can eat it or cook something simple to eat. I'm not cooking a whole other meal just for her??

When kids move out

When they are old enough to get a job and buy their own food. Until then, they eat what is available in the house. If they don't like what is for dinner then they can cook something themselves. My parents didn't really keep candy and junk food in the house so the chocolate diet wouldn't have worked for me. ?

Newly!!! Do you have any more updates on your weight loss journey or have you reached your goal weight I'm almost 2 months in and I need more motivation you were my motivation when I started (creeper right) lol I still have a long way to go though ?

It really depends. If my child wants to eat meat (like their dad), they can choose to. If they choose to be vegetarian (me not pregnant), the can choose that too. I mean, they aren't growing up on junk and snacks are fruit and veggies but if they truly don't like something, I'm not forcing them. I hate Brussel sprouts and deer meat and remember crying as a child if I had to eat them. Blah! I'm not doing that to Isaac. I guess some choices are okay from an early age (try a bite rule) but I'm not imposing my taste buds on them.

It depends on the child and their ability to control themselves and know their own bodies. I played ice hockey and was on strict diets depending on if I needed to gain or lose anything so I took care of my diet starting at about 13 years old. My mother also traveled a lot so I was home alone a lot and gained responsibility early on. If my child wants to make those decisions for themselves I will expect them to be competent in other aspects of their lives first. Health and nutrition are very important so they will need to know what they eat will effect their bodies and minds.

Well in my case I can't 100% control what they eat, but all meals in the home will be monitored by me. I watch what I buy, so even if they want a snack I know it's ok. I would never let me child do a chocolate diet.

I don't make my son eat things he doesn't like, cause I don't eat things I don't like. I try and introduce the foods he dislikes with things he likes , I try different recipes with it sometimes it works at times it does not. If I cook something he doesn't like I always have alternatives , maybe some left overs of things I know he'll eat other times it's just a cold cut sandwich or pb& j. Either way he eats. So I guess you can say I'm not controlling when it comes to what he eats , I just wanna make sure my baby eats. Btw he's 3 1/2 years old now & I've always been like this with him, it works for us.

My parents expected me to eat what they made every night until I moved out. It's rude not to. They wouldn't care if I went out to eat with my friends tho but it was my money and my car.

As for the stupid chocolate diet I would feel like I failed somewhere as a parent.

I wanted to go vegetarian for a long time from like 13 to 16 but my dad wouldn't let that happen. And my mom would never make something without meat because they didn't want me to get sick from not enough protein. And I probably would have if they let me. So I'm glad they didn't.

When they start buying their own food. Don't like what's in the kitchen? Too bad.

My parents stopped having complete control over what I ate when I was old enough to go out on my own. So around 11/12. However, they still had control of what I ate for supper every night.

If I ever tried a "chocolate diet," I feel like my parents would let me go through with it (at my own financial expense) just so I can learn a valuable lesson the hard way: eating nothing but junk food has some serious consequences with your physical, mental and emotional health.

I want to raise my daughter to value healthy foods. She's not going to be gluten/egg/cow milk/soy/everything -free like her father unless she chooses it, but I hope that by the time she starts going to school (3-4?) I can give her somewhat of a say in what I pack for her lunches. We'll probably start off small with "What kind of fruits/vegetables do you want?" And give her choices on what to cook for dinner (of course, the choices will only be healthy). If DF and I set the example for her and raise her right, we're hoping she'll follow suit. If not, we'll have to get more strict.

When they start paying for their own food they can eat whatever they want, until then, they will eat what I buy or starve.

Well my parents worked a lot so they had no clue if I ate or not or what I did with it but they did buy the food. I had a problem and they never knew until someone from the school called my mom. She didn't care but she stopped noticing if I ate or not when I was in middle school. She never bought unhealthy food though because my dad wouldn't allow us to eat things we weren't supposed to, mostly me because I was chubby and he didn't like that.

I think nrj answered it perfectly

Once they're old enough to buy their own food. Sure, they can help decide what's for dinner & such, but they won't get control until they can pay for it themselves.

My brother has expensive taste after living with my dad & working in a restaurant. My mum still makes him eat normal food when he comes over, like chicken & chips, because it's all we can afford. If he wants to be picky, he can be picky at his dad's house.

In my eyes, Once my kids start earning their own money and preparing their own food they can control their own diet.

But then again, by the age of 12 I was binging/purging all my food and managed to do this for a solid 4 years before my parents became aware of my bulimia... And that was only because I told them. They assumed they were in control of my diet the entire time but clearly weren't.

I stop controlling HOW they eat once they can feed themselves - ie around 2-4 years old.

I stop controlling WHAT they eat when they can buy it themselves.

Нравится Ответить

I'm thinking until they are paying for their own food. What's in my house is what he will get. Unless he is buying his own food and can get all the junk he wants.

Until they move out and start buying their own food and supporting themselves.

I saw that episode and I felt so bad for her mom! I wouldn't even know where to begin but it was clear she had an eating disorder and I'm glad she was getting therapy for that.

Нравится Ответить

Well, I plan on buying healthier foods and meal planning until my kids are grown. So I guess mine will have to wait to take on a chocolate diet when they get their own places. ? idk if that makes me controlling but I like to make sure my kids and husband are getting nutritious foods daily. If I don't meal plan and cook I think they'd eat fast food or junk mostly.

It doesn't seem like it.

She's got some really bad self esteem issues

I didn't see that episode but I did see an article on mtv's website saying she was no longer doing it, thankfully. Just out of curiosity, did she grow up in a home that was really strict about food?
