Should I start looking for daycare now?

Should I start looking for daycare now?

This is going to be my first baby and everything I read about daycare for infants says to start looking now. Can anyone tell me what their experience is with this? I'm a little nervous about home daycares but I'm open to them. When should I get on a wait list? I'm blessed to get 3 months of maternity so thankfully I won't have to use daycare immediately.

Right now go ahead and start looking either near your home or work, whichever location you want daycare to be close to, and start calling to get information on pricing, waitlist, and age. I found that all daycares near where I work are twice the price as where I live. I also found that many near where I live don't take kids until 18 months old lol. Then, from there you can get an idea of what price range to expect.

Some things to consider with daycares for the first time mom from the two in daycare mom:

1. Not all daycares lock their front door. I was shocked that I walked in on first day of daycare to go all the way to classroom without any person in sight. I could have been anyone coming in there!

2. Some daycares have tuition that is same price whether you take kids from 8am-3pm or 7am - 6 pm. Interestingly can affect how much $$ you're paying if you are charged tuition for 8-3, then extra money for each hour from 3-6. Our daycare does this.

3. Ask for a menu. Make sure they aren't serving hotdogs every day and have a good balance of fruits and veggies.

4. Ask about breast milk storage and bottles if you plan to breastfeed. Do they allow you to being frozen milk and they make the bottles or do you need to prepare fresh bottles for every day? Same is true with formula. Some daycares make bottles for you. This can have considerable time saving incentives if they do the work for you lol.

5. Finally, how clean does the place look when you tour? Does it look like any doors accessible to kids or any dangers? (Stacked furniture in a corner where babies may roam)

These are all things that are details, yes, but I had no idea what I was looking for when I went looking and signed up at the first place. After baby was born I went back and saw so many bad things about it. Sifned up for another and could have walked in and grabbed a kid and no one would have noticed! 2 bad experiences before I found the place we are at now and have been for 3 years.

Good luck! Hope this helps :)

The good ones have waiting lists, so YES.

You can tour daycares and observe how they treat the children....its never too early to start looking because some daycares do have waiting lists and the earlier you get on one...the better
