Perineal Massage

My midwife suggested I start perineal massage starting this week (35 weeks) through to the end to prevent tearing. Not gonna lie, it's not a good time and the word "massage" is wildly misleading. Has anyone done this? Any success stories? Waste of time?

The massage itself is very uncomfy I've been doing keigels since my 29th week I'm now 37 and still doing it ... Also know that if ur nurses use realllyyy warm towels down there it increases ur blood flow and can prevent tears also drinking lots nd lots of water keeps skin hydrated and stretchy down there ... Wish u all the best of luck ...

I started doing it closeto end of 2nd tri and pretty often up until delivery.

I can not really say either way if it worked or not, but I had no tearing, no stitches.

Ill start in a few weeks with this baby as well =) hoping my nurses are just as awesome as the first time around!

I haven't done this before but the nurse usually do it for you while your pushing until the doc comes in. I tore with my first and he was only 3lbs ? but I didn't even know I tore until the doc told me. I've had two 5lb babies since then and have not tore with them.

I've also heard***^^ sorry

I've an easy heard doing it in the bath or warm water helps. One if my girlfriends said she shan't do that, BUT for about an hour during her labor, one of the nurses did something similar to her (with lube or something) and that really helped her.

That's the advice I was looking for. Thanks!

I did it throughout my 2nd & 3rd trimesters on my Dr recommendation. The last few weeks when I couldn't reach comfortably my sweetie did it for me, though to be honest it was kind of intermittent. I had a natural birth with almost no tearing, and I remember thinking during crowning and again during my postpartum period that I with I'd been more on top of it and had done it more. friends that did it daily had no tearing and since it only takes a few minutes once you get used to it there's no reason not to. This time I'm doing it regularly!

Tearing sounds awful, but if this massage business isn't going to help prevent it any I'd rather not contortion myself down there.

@Tiffanee, did you do it the weeks leading up to your labor or just the day of?

I did it. My nurse also did it for me the whole time I was pushing. Over an hour. I didnt tear. It is uncomfortable, but I think tearing would be more uncomfortable in the end.

^^ Thats what i read aswell...

Ive heard you have to do it until.it starts giving you a burning sensation

From what I've read all you do is insert your finger into your vagina a little, press down a little but till you feel the pressure then rub your finger back and forth for 5 min, helps stretch it out so you don't tear. Hopefully this is the same thing you're talking about lol they say doing it in the bath helps too.

I'm also interested in reading replies. I'm really nervous about doing it but I'm only 26 weeks so still got some time yet, even the thought makes me clench everything haha

I would like to know what people say about this too. My doc suggested this for me also on my first visit with him. It seems uncomfortable but he said it will help in the long run. I'm 11 wks.

I had a stillborn daughter at 38 weeks this passed Nov. This is my second month ttc. (Last month we only tried for like two weeks though). My last and only pregnancy, I got pregnant the first month of ttc so I hope it's quick this time again.
