What are some tips and tricks to help your preemie breastfeed? My little 34 weeker is 10 days old and has just started to latch, she sucks for a few seconds but then gives up.
My baby was born at 34 weeks as well and had a hard time breastfeeding. Try using a nipple shield and having the nicu nurses put some milk on the shield to entice baby to keep sucking. My baby just reached 40 weeks and still uses the nipple shield most feeding. We are weaning her off of it, the lactation consult we see said that up until 40-41 weeks it is just easier for them to latch.
Good luck, don't give up!! :)

My 33-weeker had a difficult time latching. I decided to pump and bottle feed so she could come home quicker, since she was better with the bottle. Once home I try to nurse along with bottle feeding. I did have to use a nipple shield. Now at 7 months she will hardly take a bottle.
You can tray a SNS from medela to get the "idea"of nursing. My daughter latched great at first but as they upped her feeds she became less interested in latching. So I decided to bottle feed and work on latching at home. We used a nipple shield. Once she started taking a good feeding from it we cut out one more bottle every other day. Didn't want to wear her out. Then we cut out the shield all together after a week! I know it can be hard, especially not in the comfort of your own home!
I'm sure the nurses can put you in touch with a lactation nurse at the hospital plus you should have access to a medical grade breast pump so you can start giving your baby breast milk. Also There's a tube that you can use to put next to the breast to encourage the baby to latch while feeding. I've read that preemies have a more challenging time latching in the beginning because the sucking reflex is not yet strong. But I definitely encourage you to breastfeed. It's hard but so rewarding. Whatever you do I would avoid using a bottle. Once a bottle is introduced it's so hard to switch to breast.
My hospital gave me a Lansinoh LatchAssist Nipple Everter, I would use it right before feeding it would get me started with my letdown plus get some milk out which I left on my nipple. My son would get a taste then get excited about nursing.
