castor oil?!?!

What is everyone's thoughts and opinions on castor oil? Pros? Cons? Has anyone actually used it and had it work? I really do not wanna be medically induced!

I heard this can risk your babies life, babies gave died because of it. I tried it before i knew and all I got was bad diarrhea and glad I didn't go through labor with it.

Being medically induced is way safer than drinking castor oil. I can't believe people in 2018 still think this acceptable! Walk around, eat pineapple, don't risk your baby swallowing meconium and possibly dieing!

Hey not reading anything above just remembering something I read ... a young lady did try the castor oil and while many said it worked she posted saying it caused the baby to somehow get feces in their insides and the baby died. How, why or details I don’t remember. What I do remember is she lost her child to trying to induce her labor. Be safe and don’t try anything without doctors approval.

Someone also posted this in another group so don’t be too afraid of pooping during birth. Might also help to understand why castor oil actually works.

I should also mention I tried it, because the Dr gave me the go and I was in the same situation as you with GD and a larger sized baby and Dr wasn’t willing to sweep until week 40. They weren’t going to let me go past though either due to placenta problems and size. It was really nice to experience it the more natural way and it allowed me to do most of the laboring at home as opposed to a lot of the inductions you hear about. I went into the hospital around 11ish had to wait around for shift change and a room and I wasn’t really worried about time as it was a really chill labor but my baby was out at 1 on the dot after 3-4 pushes. They told me next time I need to run into the hospital lol. I would definitely do it again if it comes to that point. 39 weeks is a great time though from what I’ve researched that is the sweet spot for labor.

Please don’t do it let baby come on there own... I know everyone is getting miserable but coming from a Mommy that just had her baby at 34w and is so stressed and just wishes we could go home. It’s not worth it to risk your baby having a BM on the inside swallowing it and becoming deathly sick...

@Kayla I'm not being induced due to being gbs positive, I'm being induced due to gestational diabetes :(

I did this with my last baby at 39wks 5days bc I was scheduled to be induced at 40wks and wanted to go naturally. I took it at about 9:30pm. Took a bath. Went to sleep and woke up at about 1am with strong contractions. I pooped for legit 2 hrs straight and it sucked! At that point I was having to go so bad and having intense contractions omg I was miserable. I got to the hospital around 4:30 am still pooping a little longer and baby was born at 7:31am

I did castor oil with my first. Definitely make certain you are well hydrated before hand research the right way to do it. I think you have to split it up and only take like a tsp at a time or something. If you do it correctly it basically acts like a laxative that clears you out and leads to contractions. I did this and went into labor the next day. 39 weeks and no complications or problems! I didn’t poop during labor because I was cleared out and neither did baby.

And please note that being gbs positive means little to nothing, you can be positive today and negative tomorrow it changes that fast and that drastically. You need to remember it is your body your baby your birth do not let doctors bully pressure or scare you into thinking otherwise. Always use precautions yes but also know your rights!! As far as castor oil, it does more harm than good =/

If used by the direction of a care provider castor oil can be safe. Like anything it comes with risks, but again, under direction from a care provider can be ok. With my first my midwife directed me to drink a castor oil smoothie at week 41 day 6. It did not work for me and I did not have the horrible side effects that some speak of. How it is supposed to work is that it usually causes intestinal contractions as it clears out the system and they in turn trigger uterine contractions. For me, I barely got a tummy rumble, went to the bathroom, had one quick "clearing" and never a symptom more. It has been used like many other "remedies" for generations as a "natural method of induction". Please speak to your provider and ask for their advise. The only way natural methods will work is if your body is truly ready. I was induced medically at 42+ weeks. Best today wishes and a healthy delivery and baby!!! Also, if you choose to use this method make sure to drink extra fluids in copious amounts as it will clear your system and can cause dehydration if you don't take in enough water.

Please dont. Its dangerous. It made my friend dehydrated

Do not try it!! Like pp said it can make baby poop and baby can eat the meconium which can be fatal! Better to be safe than sorry just get induced or find other ways that are safe for you and baby.

I did castor oil with my first. It basically causes contractions and then makes you poop. Your baby can swallow poop at anytime during delivery. My midwife told me to do it. It’s an old remedy. I’ve read bad stories. But never heard one with my own ears.

I have to be induced as I'm not aloud to go past 39 weeks due to medical reasons. Also my doctor refuses to do a membrane sweep due to me being gbs positive even after she said it would pose no threat.

Don't do it! It can cause the baby to have a bowel movement and swallow meconium which can result in death. Plus it will give you horrible diarrhea that will more than likely last you're entire labor and trust me you don't want that. lol.

I would try primrose oil and red raspberry leaf tea, bouncing on an exercise ball, and if it came down to it a membrane sweep. Primrose oil is supposed to be good for labor and the red raspberry tea will help tone your uterus for labor. :)

Also remember it's perfectly normal to go 42 weeks before an induction. Inductions are really popular in our culture because of convenience (even tho some really do need them), but I wouldn't get one unless you have to.

Good luck! Not much longer! ?

I’ve heard horror stories about it so I would not try it all. Maybe ask for a membrane sweep or if the dr can just break your water and not do the pitocin if it’s not necessary. Sex can help too but not until your body is ready to go into labor :)
