I'm 35 weeks, and last Tuesday I went to the doctors and I was 1 cm dilated and 0% effaced. This Tuesday I went and I am 2 cm dilated and 80% effaced. How many mommas have had this happen? Any advice? For those who have had it happen how did everything play out and what should I expect? What happens whenever I'm 100% effaced? I have no idea what to expect and it is making me nervous! She also said he is head down and that his head is very, very low! That she could feel him through my cervix!

My midwife (and in The Bradley Method book) says not to rely on dilation for when labor will start. You can be dilated for weeks before labor.

I was dilated 2cm for about 4 weeks before I went into labor, and I had to have a membrane sweep before I did.

I checked mine today and i can feel his head and apparently 2 cm dilated ?? cant wait now shows how close we all are to meeting them

Agree with hbanana. I was walking around about 3cm dilated it’s my first for weeks. I got 2 membrane sweeps and she ended up coming a week past her due date.

I know about the dilating but was more curious about being 80% effaced. What happens when I reach 100% effaced?

Nothing happens when you are fully effaced. Effacement is even less of an indicator than dilation. Your body is getting ready for labor which is great! These numbers mean your body will likely be well prepared to deliver vaginally when the time comes as long as baby cooperates. All of this is great! However, they don't really tell you when things will happen. I was fully effaced and 4cm for more than 3 weeks before I was induced with #2. Time seems to slow down when you are thinking you can go into labor art any moment.

I was 4 cm and 80% effaced for 6 days bwfore having my last baby. But some people may only be a few hrs

I completely effaced at 31 weeks with my daughter. I am a hair stylist so I got put on bed rest so that my cervix wouldn't open. I stayed on bed rest for 8 weeks, and had contractions daily. I stayed pregnant though, when I went to the hospital to get induced I was dilated to 5cm already. I have birth to a health 9lb 4oz baby girl. Talk to you doctor, they'll probably tell you to rest whenever You can.

You sound just like me my last two pregnancies. I was checked at 35 weeks for the first time and had started dilating and was 50% effaced and progressed every week. Babies head was super low and the doc could feel it. Both of my sons came right on their due dates though, the first one naturally and the second one I was induced the day before. This time it’s a little girl and I just had my 35 week appointment and she couldn’t even get to my cervix it was so high up still. Hope you are blessed like I was and get to see your babies face no later than their due date. ❤️

What's with all the checking of dilation? Especially when not in full blown labour

I was wondering the same thing @pp! I wasn't checked until 39/40 weeks

@pp It depends on your doctor, mine has always started to check at 35 weeks. I suppose you could always tell them you don’t want them to but I’m always curious to know if I’ve made any progress.

I’ve been in l&d for the past 2 days and I was contracting like crazy and I started at 3cm and am now at 5cm but apparently little miss changed her mind and now everything has stopped which is good so she can get bigger inside of me. It’s just so crazy. With my daughter I was induced at 37 weeks and I was completely closed. With my son I had a lot of pre term labor and I needed to get the shots every other week to stop his labor at 30 weeks until the last time checked into the hospital at 36 weeks 6 days already at 6cm and still not considered active labor because my contractions were there just not consistent. They broke my water my water the next evening because I was almost to a 7cm and I lived an hour away from the hospital. I’m just curious if this is one is gonna start and stop again like him. But yea dialation isn’t always a reliable teller of when active labor will start.

My doctor does checks because I am high risk and they would like to be prepared for anything. At least that's what I was told
