I never had to pay for scans for any of my kids.

Ring around. Some places charge some don't. For my second Bub I was eligible for 1 of each scan free

I've also never paid for a scan. The only one I actually paid for was a early gender 3D scan at 16 weeks. I've done all my ultrasounds at the hospital I give birth at.

I can't ring around, only one place in town that does them. Joys of living rural!

The only scan I paid for was the NT scan at 12w. Ring around like coop says and it should help.

There was also a website someone mentioned that you can find places that bulk bill but can't recall where it was.

These are just approximates as I can't remember the exact amounts sorry.

Viability scan (had early bleeds) was $170 with $50 rebate

NT scan was $200 with $60 rebate

Anatomy scan was $230 with $70 rebate

Each place will be different but they should be able to give you a price over the phone as well as a rough estimate of what your minimum rebate from medicare will be. Also if you've hit the safety net then you'll get more money back.

I have to pay for mine, I've gone private. Cost me $340 for NT, morphology, and one to look at growth/check my placenta(I have a low lying one). I'll be having one more to check my placenta again and it will only cost $115 (same place, they charge less after three scans). I got $85 back without safety net and $150 with (if I remember correctly).

Side note: I am in Sydney, everything is expensive here.

My 12 week scan was $200 and I got nothing back, the ultrasound place told me I wasn't entitled to anything because my pregnancy was healthy ?

Xoxo I'm in Sydney also and mine were free. Some places wanted to charge where others didn't

Pp, yeah I know ?. I'm just a private patient, everything cost when you go private. Though it cost a lot more then when I was in cairns.

Haven't had to pay in previous pregnancies but this time I do. One staff member told me recently it was a change Julia Gillard brought in.

I've found that with both my pregnancies the 12 week one was around 200 with no rebate (which is super weird in my opinion given it's importance). But then with both pregnancies I've had to have extra ultrasounds for various reasons after 20 weeks and haven't had to pay for them. I literally have no idea how they work it out. But as a public patient, I don't have to pay for anything else so I don't mind the small cost as just a once off, especially in comparison to going private.

If money is an issue, as I know it can be, perhaps ask about payment plans? I'm sure they would have them.

Only one I've paid for was the 12 week NT test as it's not compulsory...was about $200 with maybe $80 rebate. The rest I've gone through public hospital so all through Medicare
