Two Week Rule?

I had a coworker tell me she did not have anyone over for one to two weeks after giving birth so that she can learn without any distractions, etc. Meaning no vistors for that one to two weeks. She said she did this and it helped immensely. Has anyone done this before? The reason I am considering it is because I have a semi controlling mother and a very very very controlling MIL.

You're welcome to try that, my husband even said we would try that with our first born. But It's good to have someone come over to help.

When I was pregnant with my son, I don't know how I would have done it without my MIL, sister & mom. My MIL doesn't work, so she came over whenever I needed her, cleaned my house, did my laundry & made us dinner. She let me nap when I had enough milk pumped, while my husband was at work & it helped me out SO much! I also learned how to do everything just fine. Just being a new mom, it was nice having the help!

When my son came, I was glued to the couch breastfeeding and everyone else was running around me, getting meals made, washing dishes, cleaning the house... My MIL and I disagree on a lot but I appreciated all the helping hands around. Everyone is different though. I liked having visitors, especially if they brought me food.

I didn't do this, but I felt so lonely after our son was born. My husband had to go to work the morning after we came home, and I had the most empty feeling.

I loved it when my parents would visit and my friends too. My in-laws live far enough away that they didn't get to come see us for a while; other than the fact that it'd be an overnight visit, I'd love to see them soon after. The idea of having house guests at that time bothers me. It helped that anyone who did come made sure not to overstay their welcome, but honestly sometimes I wanted people to stay longer.

Everyone reacts differently to motherhood; for me, my postpartum anxiety made being alone (with the baby, of course) extremely overwhelming the first few weeks.

I won't have anyone come visit for 3 months. With my first I had family come stay with us at 4 and 6 weeks. I was miserable so I'm telling everyone sorry but we'll send lots of pics.

Oh wow. I needed all the help I could get with my first. I needed to be driven to dr's appointments (2 the first week), brought meals and my house tidied. If your husband can do all that with being tired himself but see how you feel in hospital before setting hard rules, you don't want to make things unnecessarily hard on yourself

Yes I agree. For me I did 6 weeks!!!

On my second baby & I have a huge family and know that they're going to want to be there and help and stuff especially my mom. I'm having a girl and we haven't had a baby girl born in the family for a long time. I'm okay with it, tbh. If they start to overwhelm me, I'll have to tell them. But until then they can visit or come over whenever.

Yes it is my first. I already have some anxiety issues so I'm scared of having that extra stress from them after the baby is born. I already had issue with her being completly upset on how far were moving from her, which is only 30-40 minutes.

Im a ftm and i kno my mom not gonna let me i dont live with her and shes already talking about my hubby and i gotta go stay w her for one week so she can show me ugh

Is this your first? Then I would say yes. If they're going to stress you out, definitely take 2 weeks. It's very overwhelming and your hormones are out of control. I'm super tight with my mom and she would come over in the evenings and bring us dinner. My in-laws came when baby was 6 weeks but they live far away. You will want time just you and baby to figure out what you're doing

I lived with my mom so other than her nobody really got to see baby for like a week. I also was recovering from my c section and the first week is awful so you mostly want to sleep anyways but we finally took her to SOs dads house because he was working the days i stayed at the hospital. It does help but also watch for signs of postpartum depression because i got it really bad out of nowhere after the 1st month and just wanted anyone to be around to help me i was so scared to be with her alone it didnt help that SO was nervous with how small she was and didn't help much.

I had a three day rule for our parents. They visited in the hospital but as soon as we went home, I wanted three days. It was two weeks for everyone else. This time, I think I'll allow one set of parents at a time. Either my parents or my in laws, mainly only because I'll be a repeat c section and my son will be 17 months at the time this one arrives. I'll want people around that he knows well to be able to play with him and pick him up. My husband will be here, but I'm sure we'll have our hands full and since I won't be able to do a lot of the things I normally do for my son, I'm going to want the help. Otherwise, I think I limit on the visitors is a great idea.

I recommend 2 wks to a month. It will give you some much needed rest and allow your hormones to calm down which might be extra helpful when you around people that don't know boundaries. It's also nice to just bond as a new family. The time flies by and your family has the rest of their lives to bond with the baby.

I waited a month and will do so again. You heal well as the mom and the babies immune system gets stronger. It's a win win.

We live across the country from family and I only had one friend visit in the hospital when my #2 was born and it was a week or two before my parents arrived. I think it's a wonderful low stress rule to follow. It's great to focus 100% on bonding with baby and not worry about cleaning up for guests or feeling obligated to let them hold your baby or wondering when they're going to leave. You can feel free to sleep or do skin to skin or breastfeed (if you choose to) without worrying about whether someone will ring the doorbell, etc.

You could make an exception for someone that is only there to help you and do things for you like cook & clean, such as a postpartum doula or close family/friend. My aunt's mom would come into town after baby was born -- not to spend time with baby but to take care of my aunt, let her shower or nap when needed, etc.

If/when you do allow visitors, make a list of chores and don't feel ashamed to give each visitor an assignment. Also, schedule visit times beforehand or when guests arrive, tell them ahead of time that they will need to leave at a certain time if it's someone like your MIL who might overstay her welcome.

With my first everyone just seemed to naturally wait about 2 weeks after we came home but at the hospital I had visitors so much I barely got rest. With my 2nd it was similar but there was 3 people who came over during the first few weeks for short visits and they actually surprised us with food so I wouldn't need to stress about cooking. With my 3rd since she was in the NICU for 8days everyone just sorta let us know what they were doing then if we wanted we could join or if we didn't feel up for it we could pass. I anticipate that this time only visits during the first like month will be from just my parents or my in-laws since we now live 30-45min away from the rest of our friends/family and no one ever comes to visit anymore even though we regularly go out of our way to places to hangout with them when they invite us.

I think it's truly up to what YOU feel would be best.
