Weight loss

Just curious, what did everyone's babies lose the first few days/week? Mine lost 14 oz but then gained 3 back (he was weighed after he had just fed) and then lost 2 so now he's at a 13 oz loss and 1 week old. I'm going back in 2 days and they gave me some tips but I was wondering if anyone had some more. I was just pumping but now he's back on the boob and then I top him off with what I've pumped. Would it be worth it to add some formula? The pediatrician said I could and think of it as a "protein shake".

I feel really blessed since I had surgery on my right breast at 19 which served the ducts so I exclusively fed on my left side

I had my baby june 7th and he was latching but since I have inverted nipples, it's a little harder, I use the nipple shield too. Went to our first great starts visits on the 10th and he had lost 1 lb and they were concerned. Lactation consultant saw my breast and told me to give them a rest since my nipples were really cut up and cracked. Told me tp start pumping only and bottle feed both breast milk and formula if needed. Been do that since then as my nipples heal, and hes been so much better. He wasnt getting enough at first (milk came in like 3 days after birth) I wanted to exclusively breast feed only but I was pretty much starving my baby at first. He is so much better now. Will be breast feeding again though after next appt later this week. So I say, gotta xo whats best for them, like the saying says "fed is best" :)

I was on an IV for 25 hrs so I guess it could have been a lot of fluids for him too.

My daughter was 6lb 2 ounces at birth, 5lb 14ounces the next day at discharge, 5lb 9ounces at her dr appt the following day.. her ped wasn't concerned she said as long as it's not over a pound. And I know for sure now that she's gained it back, once my milk came in at about 3-4 days PP she's been doing nothing but eating, I nurse her on demand and watch for the hunger cues

Baby lost 8oz from birth to day 5. Not a terrible loss. My pedi said our goal is to get back to birth weight by 2 weeks of age. We are feeding on demand and not letting him go longer than 4 hours between feeds at night. She said as long as he has 4-6 soaked diapers a day and a poopy diaper once a day that is yellow and seedy looking, there is nothing to worry about it.

DD didn't lose much BUT I didn't have any IV fluids during labor so that makes a huge difference.

She still was always on the slow to gain side though.

She was back at birthweight at weeks.

I would try to not focus an daily changes & just see where you guys are at at your 2wk appt... given baby is having good wet & dirty dipes. If needed, then you can reassess if there are any issues going on with latch, transfer, etc.,

My lactation consultant has said to expect them to lose 7% of their birth weight and expect them to not gain it back for at least 2 weeks. Agree with the above posts, if he's having the amount of wet/poopy dipes (and if the color of the poop is yellow, not green) then you're doing fine!

He does have a lot of wet and poopy diapers. He goes every time he eats. I'm just tired of them being on me about his weight. They said I'm doing a good job but I guess they're hinting I need to do better haha

I wouldn't sweat it as long as you have the wet/poop dipes and he's eating regularly. My first gained her weight back by about 2 weeks as well and when the milk first comes in, it's not that full fatty content just yet. You can be kind of exploding (esp with pumping and breastfeeding which sometimes yields over-production), and the breastmilk will stay pretty watery/foremilk consistency until it adjusts. Not to say that foremilk is bad for them -- not at all -- just it takes a minute to balance out.

Plus a ton of docs base weight gain on formula numbers. If you're close enough to the range, try not to worry. If he's happy, he'll be chunking back up in no time. ---also check out la leche or breastfeeding group for support! So helpful in times like this.

Mmm. I will start by saying that I am a huge believer in fed is best. If you are worried and it will bring you peace of mind, it might be worth trying. However... My daughter 2 years ago was premature and her pediatrician asked me to supplement with formula. She thrived. She grew and did so much better overall but she after a few days completely refused my milk for formula instead. I know you have felt like a lot of your son's birth was out of your control. Know that it is possible that Caellum may do the same. I just want you to make an informed decision. That is NOT to say that if your pediatrician is very concerned about the weight losses that you shouldn't do it. Fed is best. Take care of yourself!

My doctor said the goal was to gain the weight back by 2 weeks.

You would be amazed how much they can gain in a week.

I would dream feed to make sure he gets enough and it could boost your supply too.

But as long as he is happy you are doing great.

My experience with formula: day two she started her first cluster feed - after 6 hrs of non stop feeding I couldn't feel my nipples and they were bleeding. I broke down - asked for formula. She drunk 40ml. I was amazed. She then slept for 4-5 hrs.

I am now feeding her formula and pumping only. I give her my milk once a day.

EBF babies can take up to a month to get back to their birth weight. As long as he has enough wet/poppy diapers I wouldn't worry.

Short Luteal Phase?

I've just started temping because I believe that the reason I haven't had a BFP yet, after 20 months, is because I believe I may have a Luteal Phase Defect.
