Burping baby when breastfeeding

So today my coworker mentioned her sister said she read on the Internet that you don't need to burp a baby when breastfeeding. This is something I never gave any thought to, anyone know anything about it? I'll ask my doula as well but I was curious if anyone knew.

I breastfed and never had to "burp" him really. He never had gas or colic either but i was a teenager that had no clue what the hell i was doing. LOL

I burped between sides

I would just say don't break a good latch to burp. Either do it at the end or between each breast (what I did) I would always find they burp from being upright just switching sides in the middle of the feeding.

They don't get all the air a bottle fed baby does so they won't have as much gas. But you should still rub their back to help them burp after a feeding. But there's many times they won't burp.

I've breastfed 6 babies all over a year each.

I never burped my breastfeed baby! But she never got a bottle!

If baby looks irritable at the breast I do. My babies were always gassy so I always burped. What's the harm in burping? I love my babies laying on my shoulder and listening to their little noises in my ear and smelling them rubbing their back and rocking them to sleep that way.

My sister doesn't well didnt burp her baby he was just born is only breast feeds she dis this bc the doctor and her breast feeding coach told her NOT to ... I told her she needs to bc they can still spit up and have gas....

I personally would .

You need to burp them. I BF both my kids for 20 months each and I burped them religiously for at least the first few months.

I rarely burped my son. Only if I felt he needed it.. I had a huge letdown that sometimes made him unlatch and gasp so I made sure to burp then

I read that too before I breast fed my lil boy and it is so not true lol maybe for some but my boy had bad reflux too so burping was a must!

Breastfed babies don't need to be burped. I ebf my son and never burped him. There are a bunch of good articles but I like this one. It tells the history and purpose of burping.

Never burped my 3. All were breastfed.

At my breastfeeding class I was told breastfed babies don't need to be burped, they get the air from using a bottle. But she also said burp the first couple weeks but if they don't burp don't worry about it.

Burp them either way. They will take in air when nursing too.

Every baby is different my daughter never needed burped she almost burped herself. My son I didn't always burp but he occasionally needed it. When they drink bottles it's more likely. But when nursing sometimes they are ok. P.s neither of my kids spit up like ever and I'm not exaggerating

I never burped any of my 3. They would fall asleep while feeding and I would lay them down. Never had any tummy issues.

Thank you EMC for the article!!!

Interesting how there are different responses, I guess it does depend on the baby??

I never needed to burp my breastfed kids

??Also, FWIW, I really love this blog and evidence-based practice in general, but their wording can be a little aggressive and irritating. Take it with a grain of salt.

When feeding from the breast, I never burped. Only when recovering a bottle did I burp. Never have any thought to burping him from the breast. My sister never burped her daughter either, ebf. It literally was with bottle introduction that has became an issue??

Definitely burp the baby. Little gas bubbles can build up quickly in such a tiny body and become painful. I burped all of mine and on a few occasions when no burp would come and I'd just lay them down, they would get belly aches. But as pp said, all babies are different.

I was just reading about this recently and it really piqued my interest!

I always thought my first born had trouble with some mild reflux bc she spit up a ton, but after reading this, I've considering the idea that I actually aggravated her tummy rather than helped it by burping. Esp since She was EBF at the time and had a great latch = minimal air/gas bubbles.

Scroll down to the burping section. It's good food for thought. I plan on delaying some burping early on to test things out.

I always burped my daughter. It depends on the baby though. If you find your baby never burps and doesn't seemed bothered by it, then you could stop. But I would at least try

I thought it sounded like it wasn't true but I wasn't sure. It's something I never really thought about, I just assumed they would still need to.

Yes, you still burp them. Some need to be burped more

Breastfeeding.

I am a HUGE breastfeeding advocate. No, I will NOT shame you if you decide to formula feed, and will not tolerate anyone else doing so on my post. Everyone has their own reasons on why they feed their child the way they see fit.

?????? me!! I most definitely will be!
I am pregnant with my fourth child. I have an older daughter and a set of twins.
I nursed all 3 girls and plan to with #4.
