Weight lifting
Any women continuing to lift weights while pregnant or did in a past pregnancy? It's my first pregnancy and I'm 8W2d. Just looking to see if anyone has any advice or wants to share their experiences! My pride has been hurt so far from having to cut back on the amount of weight I usually do.
I do!
Currently 34w5d and had been lifting for about 4 years prior to getting pregnant. My midwife said I could absolutely continue ??
The amount I lift is less than half of what it was pre pregnancy and I'm really careful with not overdoing it but it's something I really enjoy :)
Since about a week ago I've reached a new level of fatigue so I'm only going to the gym about 2-3x a week right now and trying to walk at least twice if I don't make it to the gym. I feel like I need to listen to my body as I get closer to my due date.
Wow, you ladies are amazing :) there are definitely days when I feel so nauseous and tired I don't want to get out of bed or off the couch, especially this last week. On those days I just take an hour long walk at a fast pace with my dog. I'm hoping at my second trimester in a couple of weeks I can get back to business as usual.
I'm currently 6 months pregnant and still crossfit at least 5-6 days a week. I still lift pretty heavy and close to what i used to do..which is anywhere bt 80 and 200lbs depending on the movement. However i have been crossfitting for 4 years and I've done local competitions. I am also an occupational therapist. I was seeing a high risk doctor who has dismissed me as a client bc everything is going well. He said keep doing what I'm doing just make sure i listen to my body. I've definitely slowed down, i take more breaks, i modified ab movements by 16 wks, i don't rope climb anymore and i choose to row instead of run. This is my first pregnancy and I'm 40. Good luck with your little one!
My weights def decreased too and soon enough I had to quit on toes to bar and such. I'm 31 weeks and I still lift but mostly back squats, deadlift and split jerks. No cleans at all because it's hard not to hit the bump. Cardio was the worse for me since 1st trimester because as soon as I start running my stomach gets upset and I puke. I was still rowing until last week but it's getting harder and now I'm almost limiting everything to walk lol. I've noticed huge growth now during 3rd trimester so again I had to scale down :(
I'm a body pump instructor, and I'm 32 weeks pregnant. I actually taught a class last week! I'm done teaching, but I still go 3x's a week and just skip the ab track. I'm not lifting anywhere near what I used to, but I'm still doing it, and that's what counts! I plan to continue right up until I give birth. My friend was joking that we're going to have to play body pump tracks in the nursery to put the baby to sleep, haha ?
I still lift, just not very heavy. I also stil run and do my spin class. I did through my entire pregnancy with my son. I am currently 14 weeks with number two. Once you hit second trimester, your energy should come back and a little of your strength but you probably won't be able to workout like you did before until after baby is here!!!
Hi there.
I'm 36+4 and still go to the gym 3-4 times a week to lift weights. If course much reduced but it does still include deadlifts and squats with the Olympic bar.
As the other ladies said before, listen to your body and take it easy.
Just be careful with tummy exercises to ensure your abs don't separate down the middle.
I think it's helped me immensely throughout my pregnancy. Ive barely had any niggles like back pain or pelvic girdle pain, which other pregnant ladies complain about. I also haven't felt very tired due to the regular exercise as it helps sleep at night.
Anyway, good luck with it and hope you'll have as smooth a pregnancy as I've had.
Raebabies, if you were doing it before your perfectly fine to carry on. Just do what you have been, listen to your body and drop the weight when needed. And watch your joints as they're more soft/flexible. Unless your high risk in which case chat to your doctor first.
I see a PT who writes up my program every few months. You just start to modify exercises when you reach 2nd trimester. eg bench needs to be on a slight incline for things like flys etc done with free weights, legs a bit further apart to accommodate growing bump in squats/leg press etc, upright row use dumbbells instead of a bar etc. No more situps or crunches, but planks etc are fine if your comfortable doing them. Also watch your balance in lunges etc, as your center of gravity is constantly changing. And stretch real good! I find I'm prone to charley horses during pregnancy, so stretching is a must.
My weights have been slowly dropping, to the point where I'm doing half the weight i was. Its completely normal. We tire easily, our joints are all soft from the hormones, and i think the hormones are part of why we aren't as strong - our muscles have softened as well as our joints and as a result they wear out quicker. I blame all my muscle cramps on this too.
I think just keeping up with what we can is more important than maintaining what we could do, makes it easier to get back into it if we've kept up the habit, as well as the heath benifits.
I still weight lift- I hate how much my weight has dropped. Almost against my will because I just get tired so easily I couldn't even put up my old weight even if I tried. I'm currently 10 weeks with first baby. There's not much online about weightlifting while pregnant so I hope it's okay because I'm doing it!
