Help! Ds has started to hit

Ds has just turned 16 months and has recently started hitting (well it's more like a pathetic swat). He's seen other babies doing this at mothers group so I'm guessing that's where he picked it up. I had to leave gymboree today half way through as he would hit any child that came near him then had a meltdown when I moved him away. Ds1 was never a hitter so not sure what the best strategy is. Right now I'm telling him no and to be gentle, showing him how even though he knows, then ignoring him for a little while. Anyone else dealing with this or have any advice?

Haha our only problem with time outs is my ds loves them! We put him in his room (the only place we can put him) and he just gets a book off his shelve and sits in the chair and "reads" it. Then if you take him out of time out- half the time he goes back into his room and closes the door! Aside from removing every piece of furniture and book from his room- I need to rethink his discipline :)

Thanks for replying! I'm glad my ds isn't the only one. He's sick at the moment so I know that isn't helping. I think I will start time outs with him too. Ds1 was 18 months when we started, but I think it's time for ds2 to start learning what's not acceptable. I really don't want my ds to be THAT child so need to nip this in the bud ASAP.

We have the same problem. If ds gets tired he will hit (obviously it doesn't hurt, but not a behaviour that is acceptable).

I give him time out if he's just in a silly mood and hitting, and have stopped playing certain games for a while- like playing the drums on the kitchen pots, because he seems to hit more if he's been doing something like that. I also tell him gentle and no and show him how to be gentle.

But would love any other advice ppl have!
