Sleep.. Or 'lack of'

Please tell me I'm not alone - it might make me feel better ?

Some babies are just like that.. My daughter is 1 on Friday and still wakes numerous times, mines a bad habit of picking her up and feeding tho, what are you doing when he wakes?

Halle-freaking-lujah ladies!!

I don't know how but by some miracle he slept! I didn't do anything different.. Maybe the universe finally heard me, lol.

I put him to bed at 10:30 after his feed. He woke up at 12 and was just talking to himself and playing with his hands, lol, in his cot. He started to fuss so I went in and picked him up, I offered his dummy (and he took it!) and cuddled him a little. I then put him down and patted his back and he went off to sleep. He then woke up at 2:30 for a feed (hungry cry this time, instead of a fuss).

He actually had a great feed, 20 minutes and emptied both sides (usually he only feeds on one)

He then slept until 5:30. I fed him in bed and we went back to sleep until 7:30.

2 night feeds after better than 6.. Hahah.

Me, on the other hand, slept like shat! But oh well, good baby. ?

This was exactly me & my dd2 from 4months old until about 2 weeks ago, so about 4.5 months all up.

I feel your hell!!! I was so tired I didn't know what I was doing. I've made some changes -she has soft music going all night, & I pat her back to sleep most times now instead of feeding. She is 90% better, waking 1-2 times a night & there has been 2 nights she didn't wake.

Your scenario is so similar, dd2 was a great sleeper at night until 4 months, she had injections, also got bad ear infections around that time & never slept well again for a long time,

I hope it changes for you soon.

I'd say if he is waking for food but only eating for a few minutes it's just for comfort and resettling.

If that's the case solids won't fix the 'problem'

Possibly look into ways of helping him learn to self settle again when he wakes.

DH works 2 jobs at the moment and he literally gets to sleep about 4 hours at night, so I couldn't ask him to do a night feed even if we did formula feed, but I don't think that we will.

And I have done my own research and DH and I have come to a decision that we won't be feeding him solids 'early'.

*I say early because I mean not before 6 months.

I know he won't be little forever and he'll eventually sleep through, sometimes it just feels good to get things off my chest ?

The solids is a hard one. DS was also a bad sleeper. I stuck to the 6 month recommendation for solids... Once he did start them at 6 months he started sleeping much longer patches consistently. I did wonder if he could have started a bit earlier.

When I researched it though, I came across a lot of mums who started solids before 6 months due to sleeping issues and it didn't help... So it really is very hard to know.

Can you make up a bottle before bed so your partner can do one of the night feeds... At least that way you'd get one longer patch of sleep in?

Unfortunately I can't give you any advise. But it will get better. The first 3 months I lived on 3x20mins of sleep every second night and 4 hours the other nights. And my boys are still not sleeping through.

We part cosleep and I think that helped a bit.

Get on the list for your local sleep school now as it can take ages to get in. They can support you to get some sleeps happening.

Haylot, I keep telling myself that. I've heard teenagers sleep a lot, so it won't last forever ;) hahaha.

Kyper, I'm the same! I find it's just easier to feed him that fight with him ?

Maybe once my iron levels pick back up it won't be so bad because I'm not physically stuffed too ?

I havnt read all of this but don't give formula thinking it will make him sleep longer ! It's honestly just a comfort thing And if he is waking up to comfort suck imagine having to make bottles all that time ?

If he isn't ready for solids then don't start them. Your the best judge. The doctor isn't in your home watching the Baby. Yes they offer great advice but you can't force a baby to eat

My little one is almost 11 months old and eats solids all day long . He still wakes up all night coz he loves to be suckled off to sleep ? it's comfy they love it.

If you can manage some sleep training that might help. I was never strong enough. Especially at night. I'm just to tired and give up and feed him.

Any way now I'm rambling but just wanted to say there is plenty of bottle fed babies who don't sleep also :-)

I doubt formula or solids will make a difference. My ds was up a lot over night and solids made him worse. My girls have slept through from really early. All ebf. It's luck of the draw. Bub is only young, it can't last forever.

I doubt formula would change anything, or solids. Some babies are just frequent wakers

I've considered the formula before bed idea, (and this is absolutely nothing against formula feeders) but I like that he's only ever had breastmilk ? (well, that's a lie, he's had 2 bottles of formula, but I was in hospital, so..) and I guess if it did work it would make me feel s*** ty because my milk isn't 'good enough'

lol I'm so lame.

And there's the fact that he sucks at taking a bottle.

I'm dismissing the idea of solids because I do not think he's ready. I've researched the signs, etc, and he doesn't seem ready, really that's what it boils down to. As tired as I am, I'm not going to force solids onto him earlier than he needs it for my satisfaction of a nights sleep - if it evens works.

He has a dummy, he takes it during the day but won't settle with it at night. ?

Id consider solids, i know they used to suggest waiting till 6 months before starting solids but now most actually recommend starting after 4 months due to allergies etc and hoping that by 6 months of age they eat everything, so its not as gradual as before. You need to do what you feel comfortable with but id perhaps look into solids a bit more. Apart from that id suggest to try settling without feeding for a few nights to try change the habit of waking up for a feed. Do u use a dummy?

My first woke every 2 hours until 2. She was very petite and wanted to feed often.

Woozel my DD is the same, she just starting to reduce to 2 times a night at 8 months! It's horrid, she would wake every hour or two every night ?

Could you try topping up with formula after a BF at 8.30 or even formula at the 10pm wake. It might put him in a heavier sleep if he is actually hungry

Does he have a dummy? Sounds more like he's just nursing to go back to sleep/comfort rather then for a feed

My ds woke every hour/2 hours at that ages i started solid and made a huge difference he was a big baby and was always hungry. Health nurse suggested it to me.
