Working out and weight gain.

Working out and weight gain.

I've been going to the gym 3-4 times a week. 30 minutes of cardio and 25 of weights. I'm counting calories and I have been avoiding juice, soda, crappy foods and drinking a lot more water. I've gained 5 lbs. but my clothes fit better and dh says he can see a difference in my body. Why the heck am I gaining weight?!?!?! This isn't fair

Stop checking your weight if your working out. Look at your body fat. If your weight is going up but your body fat is decreasing and your muscle is increasing then you are on the right track. I really recommend asking at your gym if they can check all that for you with their machine so you know where you stand at. Talk to a trainer as well so you can have an idea of how it works and you can great a goal.

Muscle does not weigh more than fat. It's more dense and therefore takes up less room. Op, the app my fitness pal will let you out in all of your info- weight, age, activity level, etc to give you an idea of how much to eat. If you exercise, you need to take that into account on your calorie intake or you risk slowing your metabolism down because you are eating too little. It takes trial and error.

There is an app called my fitness pal and it is very helpful in making sure you are getting enough of the right calories. Also you have to build muscle before you burn fat- muscle is what burns those calories! Keep up the good work, fitness is not measured by what's on the scale, you're doing great!

That's exactly what I said ?

What I meant was she could of replaced the fat with muscle GAINED weight but not size .

As she was saying her clothes fit BETTER but she has gained 5lbs .

Which seems she means she lost inches yet gained weight ?

?

Refer to the post I just posted

Muscle does weigh more than fat, but ONE pound of fat still weights the exact same thing as ONE pound of muscle.

@mamachey but a pound of fat and a pound of muscle would still weigh the same.

Same as a ton of steel would weigh the same as a ton of feathers. ☺️

You probably gained muscle. When I want to lose weight I up my cardio and avoid weights until I'm at or near my goal weight, and then add weight lifting to tone.

Muscle weighs a lot more then fat google 1 lb fat vs 1 lb muscle you'll see in the pics that the pound of fat takes up almost twice the space as 1 lb muscle

I just saw my wording now and I meant to say it takes up twice the space that's why I wrote very single thing I did under those words and in the other post as well as separate post ( it was 3-4 am and must not of re read before I post ) of course 1 lb = 1 lb in weight but the space it takes up if completely different

I find that about 14-1500 total calories per day works best and is the most reasonable for me. I actually lose weight faster than if I eat less calories. I don't count the "exercise calories" as permission to eat more.

Yes muscle is more dense so it weighs more but takes up less room. Bonus though, as you build muscle your metabolism goes up. So you look skinny, are stinger and more fit, and you burn more calories even when resting! Wins all around.

That's my total intake. How many calories do you suggest? You're so informative thank you so much!

That may not be enough. Is that net calories after exercise or what you eat total in a day? Eating too little will slow down your metabolism. Muscle doesn't weigh more than fat. A pound of fat and a pound of muscle are both a pound. BUT since a pound of fat takes up about four times the space compared to the same amount of muscle, you can look leaner without moving the scale. Also, consider doing interval training. If you are on a treadmill, sprint for 30 seconds, then jog for a minute. Repeat as many times as you can.

Yes muscle weighs more than fat!

More cardio. To burn fat, you have to keep your heart rate between 50-65% of your max (220-age) for 60-70 minutes. For about the first 20 minutes of your workout or so, you are burning carbs. Keep going though and your body will switch to burning fat stores. If you only do 30 minutes, you're getting only 10 minutes of fat burning at most. Make sure your heart rate is high enough too. How many calories are you consuming and what is your current weight?

I'd rather have muscle all in the right places other than fat

I asked this question on the healthy group today too. I also noticed that I gained weight and been doing about the same workouts. Walking for about 30 minutes to an hour and some YouTube videos for strength.

If you're lifting weights you need to do a lower weight with higher reps. It burns more fat without making the muscle bulky.

How long have you been going? A trainer at the gym told me it can take three months to really start losing weight.

But if your clothes are fitting better, who cares about the number.

Muscle weighs more than fat. Since your doing weights, you're probably gaining muscle. If you want to lose some pounds I suggest increasing cardio time.

The old and popular, not to mention correct phrase is, "Muscle weighs more than fat."

I was told measure your body and don't rely on a scale. Pp is right, muscle weighs more than fat.

Are you fairly fit/ a healthy weight to begin with?

deleted-user

It could be you are building up muscle.

You are probably gaining muscle which weighs more than fat if you are looking better and your clothes fit better i wouldnt worry too much about the scale.

Muscle weighs more than fat.. So you are probably just gaining muscle:)

How much have you ladies gained so far ?? I've gained 64lbs 😳 my husband makes me feel shitty when I indulge by reminding me how hard it's gonna be to lose the weight once baby comes. I don't know if it hurts my feelings or pisses me off but my dr doesn't seem to be concerned about all this weight I've gained I started at 106lb so I was small to begin with. Talk about stressful

Ok so not using actual numbers.. But everyone knows I'm over weight since having my girls. It's no secret. BUT i was talking with my hubby last night and idk how we got to this but he said something like (not using actual numbers) no one should weigh 800lbs, they should take care of themselves. And i said so what if someone weighs 800lbs? He said no one should weigh that, they should be healthier. I said well i almost weigh 800! I'm in the 790s. And I'm healthy. I may be overweight but i don't have any diseases, no high cholesterol, no high blood pressure, i don't have a bad heart, lungs, or anything else. So I'm healthy I'm just over weight. So then we argued about him having an issue with my weight.. Am i wrong in this? Because it really hurt my feelings.. I've tried sooo many different things to lose weight but having hypothyroidism makes you gain/hard to lose. And my medications for depression and anxiety cause you to gain also.. So it's very hard to lose weight.. But i didn't even know he had an issue with my weight until last night..
