I have cold sores, and if my daughter ever comes in contact with mine (bc let's face it, kids always touch things), I instantly wash her hands. My doctor has always said it's only contagious when fluid filled blisters are present, and the blister ruptures exposing someone to it. Now I'm not 100%, so don't quote me. I've personally never spread mine, but I'm very careful. Just watch for signs, I hope they don't....I hate them.
As someone who has gotten cold sores from a very young age from someone doing this... I'd be pissed. When my son was born I got 3 back to back from stress and lack of sleep. I didn't kiss him until they were completely healed. I didn't want to risk him getting them. They are painful, embarrassing, and gross. I probably would have gone off worse. Then again my family knows how important it is to me for my kids not to have them too. I hope your kids don't get them... I completely understand your concerns.
I believe the most contagious stage is when there are blisters present. Your kids should be safe but make sure they don't share utensils with your dad either! My dad has cold sores as well and I HATE it when he would share drinks with my kids.
Thank you... We leave tomorrow I'm still very paranoid but my dad has just not kissed them he will hug them and play with them but not more kissing... Not that I've seen at least

Yeah, children almost always get the cold sore virus from an adult in their life. Your kids will probably get it if he was kissing their lips.

Something like 90% of the population carries that strain of herpes. It's not a huge deal even in the worst case scenario.

He doesn't kiss the lips. Only cheek.
He used to kiss us on the lips but stopped a long time ago. And never kissed the lips of my kiddos.

I know it can be very serious in newborns. I have no idea about a 7 month old though.
