Low red cell count

I picked up my pre-natal bloods results from my doctors, that I had done at 10wks (approx 7wks ago) and they show that I have a slightly low red cell blood count.

Thank you all very much for your replies and advice. I'll get myself some iron tablets tomorrow, incase they help and I'll definitely bring it up with the midwife on Thursday, when I see her.

My red cell count is 4.8 when the lowest recommended count is 5, so not massively low.

Your count may not have been low enough to be a big concern. Your body is also constantly making new red blood cells, so if your count wasn't too low, they may have just wanted to give your body time to catch up. Ask about it at your next appt. there are injections you can get to help increase red cell production, as opposed to getting blood transfusions which is really more of an emergency situation, but I'm not sure how the injections would impact pregnancy. Try to eat lots of iron rich foods in the mean time to keep those levels up. Good luck!

how low is low?

I had the same problem. But my low red blood cells were low before pregnancy and I think it got worse after I got pregnant. So my doctor told me the next time I went to see her. I'm guessing it depends on how bad it is. Mine is bad because I have to see a hematologist for it and I can't get an epi if it continues to stay low. But I'd really bring it up to your doctor on your next visit. Maybe it slipped their mind to inform you. Good luck Hun.

I have low platelets, very low iron, low red blood cell count.. I have no idea what this could mean with me being pregnant? Anyone experience these problems??

I've always had anemia but has gotten worse even though I take iron every day.

lillys_mommy it stands for Hemolysis(destruction of red blood cells) Elevated liver enzymes, & low platelets
lillys_mommy @tjmcjm,
tjmcjm I'm not sure I have all the symptoms, I think it said something about high blood pressure
