CIO

I don't see why some of you are so against this. It has completely changed my life. My lo was getting up between 3-8 times a night and napping for only 20-30 min at a time. In a 24 hr period sometimes he would get 6 hrs of sleep. Usually 9-10. Talked to the public health nurse and she said he was hurting his development by not sleeping properly and suggested a rubbed his back while he CIO. This resulted in 30 min of crying multiple time a night and still no real naps. I went into my doctor and he suggested Ferber. A few nights of small interval crying and I have a new baby. He sleeps for 11-12 hrs at night getting up once to eat and takes a 2hr nap! His mood has improved and he's back to being my happy baby.

For my child I believe the positive outweighed the negative. I never let him cry for more than 15 min at a time and if he's really upset I pick him up and nurse him. I think having a baby cry for a little bit before falling asleep is far better than a baby that cries and fusses all day because he's overtired and can't be comforted. If nursing or rocking worked I would do that first.

The Ferber method makes me rage.

I don't practice CIO because the negative outweighs the positive. Do what you want with your kid. I'll choose not to CIO with mine.

I wanted to try this with my son but my husband refused it! His brother got a hernia when he was a baby from crying and he was so scared it would happen to our son. Now that he is almost two he doesn't care, but not as a baby!

I let my daughter fuss (not cry) for a few minutes. If she settles down I let her be, if it escalates to crying I go pat her. I don't let her actually cry but I don't believe that CIO means actual screaming cries. I can't do that to her. Fussing a little when I know she's got a clean diaper and a full belly is okay. She prefers to settle herself to sleep though, she will "sing" to herself for a few minutes and then drift off. She still wakes frequently though. She's 7 months.

I guess it's different for every baby. My lo settles down much quicker than when I tried to comfort him. 2 min of crying vs 20 and not at the same level.

I wouldn't try CIO before 1 year old.

I don't think it's for everyone or every baby. It worked well with my daughter (she was about one) and she wasn't having to CIO for very long. She took to adjusting to sleeping instead of waking up way too many times a night quickly. My niece on the other hand hasn't taken to it very well so my sister isn't pushing it.

I think some people just assume you leave your kid in their to cry and never check on them or aren't tending to their needs.

There is a proper way to the CIO method. I read ALL about it before considering it for my daughter.

I think most people are against the improper technique of CIO, when people let them cry for 30 min or longer. Also I don't agree with CIO for nb 8 months is plenty old enough for proper CIO method, which it sounds like you are using. :)
