Hi ladies, let me start by saying I have already left a message with my OB and am awaiting a call back, but in the meantime I thought I'd ask you guys.

I had a fair amount of dental work done when I was in my first trimester because we had already started and couldn't stop. I don't know too much about the root canal for I didn't have that done and don't want to tell you anything wrong. My advice is just stay in contact with your midwife and get their opinion. And make sure your dentist is fully aware you're pregnant. I'm sorry you're having this problem and stress :( best of luck!

So I could be wrong but I was always told dental work is fine while pregnant as long as your dentist knows they will know what is safe, the only risk is if they put you completely under like for wisdom teeth. A root canal for example is fine while pregnant.

Root canals are pretty simple but it takes more than one sitting. I had have a dental implant being i knocked my tooth out root and all in a car accident. What they will do is only numb your mouth using a needle/syringe that basically makes you think you're asleep but you're not you are just loopy and fully awake. You won't have a root anymore as that will be replaced by a screw which kinda does hurt because he is basically twisting it into your gum until it's in place. You will then have a crown screwed on, on top of that. It's really simple procedure that should never hurt your baby. The only thing that hurts is having to hold your mouth open for 1-2 hours. Although, if it is the back of your mouth they may not do anything at all. I have a molar chipped in half that they couldn't do anything for because they can't reach it to fix it.

I had a root canal in my first trimester. The dentist did less x rays than usual and just told me that the new thinking is that it's worse to let a bad dental situation get worse while you wait. My OB said it was fine. I'm sure your OB will tell you to get it taken care of if it's really this extreme.

Both my dentist, and my OB said that dental work is fine while pregnant. Just double up on X-ray vests if you must get an X-ray. In fact my OB encourages dental work to get done while pregnant, if you don't, but need it done than it could cause other problems.

I think the reason you usually don't get dental work done in the first trimester is because most dentists don't want to because of the high risk of miscarriage, if something does happen they don't want to be blamed/sued for it. So as soon as you hear back from your ob call a dentist and see if he will work on you.

Becca is right, and when I think back my OB had to fax over ab okay to the dentist so they had that in writing. But it still wasn't a big deal.

I had four wisdom teeth out in first trimester, although I was only 3 weeks I didn't know yet that I was pregnant. My midwife had me see genetics to make sure none of it (medications) interacted with the pregnancy and they reassured me that I would be fine.

I've also had two failed attempts at a root canal and one finally successful since my second trimester started. The same tooth has been infected three times now :( my midwife said Tylenol 3 is totally safe when it's needed for things like this. Since we can't take Advil, dental work can be painful.

My midwife sent an approved list by the OBs of things that are okay and not okay. They approved digital X-rays of my mouth, local anesthesia (the numbing stuff) but it was a different one that what they would use without being pregnant which made it a little more painful but not unbearable.

I hope this helps! Just remember that mouth pain is probably the worse you can experience, most likely your OB will be all for you being comfortable and out of pain and I hope you are soon!

Ugh I have a failed root canal that feels infected or just achy idk but I wish I could afford to get it fixed! I know they use laughing gas for labor at some hospitals so it shouldn't harm baby and that plus a couple local shots are all they used on my first attempt. I'm so tired of having half a sore tooth!

Thanks ladies! I heard back from my OB and got the okay to have it dealt with. I made an appointment for Monday (earliest I could find) and I'm just going to have it pulled since it's in the back and more affordable. It'll be about $90 including X-rays. I can't wait to have this over!
