daycare injury
Kind of long, need to vent somewhere. So thanks for reading if you do. What would you do if your childs daycare called you saying he (3 yrs) has a 103 fever and you rush over there wondering how this even happened so fast since earlier he had no indication he was getting sick. They even comment hiw strange it is. So you get there and he is holding an ice pack over his eye..but no-one mentions an eye injury they just say he had a fever.. And in the last 5 minutee his eyes got all messed up and they are suggesting its fever related. I rush over to the on call doctor in tears thinking he has some crazy ilness and the n.p. says it could be anything. And gives me eye drops. But my son literally could not open his eyes. I wasnt satisfied with her answer so went to an eye doctor who examined and said it was a decent size cornea scratch. And he most definitly would have cried. My son says something about how a kid with an airplane hit him and then the teacher put the kid in time out and gave my son ice. Ofcourse I call daycare back they say they have no airplanes. (Maybe kid brought toy from home?) There is supposedly cameras so I ask to see them incase he even poked himself in the eye I need a baseline to work with. and the director says something about new security system and she needs the other director to show her how to work them and will call me back over the wekeend. Still no call. But they made it seem like they had no his eye was injured The ophthalmologist said the fever was probably got so high from the pain since hes not sick at all and it went down after they gave him ice for "his head" to lower the temp. Thankfully hes doing so much better now the eye dr was able to put a contact in and he immediately could open his eye. its just beyond me how noone there knows anything about this and how painful it was yet they just send him home for having a fever. I'm going to take him out of there because in the past he would say kids would push him around and the staff response was always "its a possibility" and told him he needs to tell them if that happened. Should i just withdraw him or demand to see cameras again? I had to pay $95 to the eye dr plus meds so it would be great to be reimbursed but think I signed papers when he first went stating they wouldnt be responsible for injuries in their care. He only went 1 day a week too so Ill just have family watch him if I can that day.I come across as soft spoken and nice and feel like everyone sees me as a push over sometimes. but Im so livid my baby was in so much pain!! And I feel like there covering something up.
@kenzie. Thats awful what happened to your son too. Some daycares care more about covering their a** then about the child. I might get a lawyers opinion on the matter. I just feel so mentally spent on everything. I really dont want to put him in any daycare at this point. Im waiting to hear back from a home daycare. It sucks hows theres risks everywhere though.
I would demand to see footage or you're bringing a lawyer. And I would pull him out. My son got both of his eyes busted by falling into the corner of a table at 2 years and they dismissed him Bc too many parents asked what happened to him and it was a liability. Used the excuse he opened the door? get a $5 child proof door knob cover? So I'd assume it's a huge liability on their part that false statements were said. I'd demand what you want. I can't trust daycares these days.
@eyvon thats how I feel I am just thankful hes better and want to put it behind me. It was a nightmare and took so much out of me. I'm sure him too. The more I keep rehashing it the more it stresses me out.
@tbree I wish I knew that before when I went there. I cooled down alot and really dont know if I want to go back.
I dont understand why my son isnt able to tell me one story. He communicates great usually. Yet seems so confused about it so I quit asking. He came with me today for his things and didnt seem upset or anything to go there and start playing. Which makes me wonder if it truly was an accident. If he did do it to himself maybe they werent watching him, but still I wish I knew. They did call me early that afternoon saying he didnt seem like himself and they realized he had a temperature. Thats it though. Im just glad hes back to his wild self again. The eye dr.said these things happen at daycare which I get its just the camera situation that still bothers me. Either way I appreciate everyone's advice and I'm going to reread it if necessary, if I decide to pursue it anymore.
It IS an issue that should be reported. I worked at a daycare and ALL incidents were noted, even though we didn't have cameras at that point, and if they were certain injuries they were reported to parents right away. Your son's injury is categorized under report immediately.
What if he had permanent eye damage because of not being watched correctly? Things happen quickly, yes, but they're supposed to have enough to teachers to a specific number of kids (for 3 year olds it's 1 to 10) for this reason.
It's infuriating they're giving you a run around especially with how serious an injury it is. Report it, OP.
If there are cameras, footage can be pulled. They may have to pay to have someone from their security systems team to come pull the footage but if course it can be done.
Find out who their system is through and what their system is called.
Call the company and ask about that specific system and how a customer who has it would access footage.
They will tell you if it is something the consumer can do themselves or if they have to pay for a service call to come and review the footage.
If they gave to pay for a service call, let them know and coordinate a time for all of you to meet to see the day first hand.
If they say customer can view online, ask the process, wrote it down and inform director that you know the steps she needs to take.
You could always say you ate worried that something is being covered up and will make this a police matter, or hey your lawyer to request footage.
Good luck, it shouldn't be too complicated.
I’m so glad he’s feeling better already! Yeah it sounds like you might not ever get an answer. Me personally I would probably just drop it and never go back. It really does sound like they are covering something up thou. Maybe a teacher accidentally did it or something. Idk. Hopefully you can find a better place for him that suits you guys better. It’s hard to find a place you completely trust.
I dont think I will ever know. I went with my aunt for back up and they( his teacher and director)said its a new security system and couldn't play back anything. I said so whats the point of cameras? And the director just gave me a look. Then she added how where my son sits up during nap time (when they noticed) he would he in a blind spot even if the cameras could be played. The director understood why I was so upset and said she honestly thinks he nodded out on a book because he never sleeps during nap but reads quietly. I just felt there was alot if contradictory statements like I asked if anyone was around him and his teacher said no hes always a loner. I said thats strange because the gym daycare he plays with everyone then the director said yeah well youve seen him when you pick him up hes playing with kids. What I also found out was his teachers granddaughter was hospitalized that day and im guessing maybe she got distracted? Either way its their job to watch the kids. My son is so confused first he said a kid poked him in the eye with an airplane now he says he fell asleep on a book after hearing what they said. So im not going to ask him anymore. Tommorow I'm getting his things and have been visiting other places. My aunt can't watch him every fri so im kind of worried what if something like this happens somewhere else ? . I'm looking into smaller ones for now, and havent decided where Im going to leave this as far as having them investigated, like this is grounds to report it right? A few daycares I mentioned this to all seem to stick together and say how fast things happen and alot dont even have cameras( but apparently some are useless even if they do.) I just dont get how they didnt know. But my son is doing so good. His cornea is completely healed no scar tissue, nothing.
I just re-read your comment, that makes me so sad the injury must've been so painful ?. And they just sent me home saying he had a fever. Even the eye doctor said he most definitely would have cried when it happened so something is very fishy. And I will report it to cps if I dont get any answers for sure. You cant judge a book by its cover this place looked so nice and had great reviews but I always see new people working there and my questions in the past were always "its a possibility". I know its not easy but enough is enough. My son is so so easy going and keeps to himself I hate how some kids want to bother him.
@mamabird , that's a good idea. If he wont write it then at least documentation. I'm going to demand answers tommorow.
My mom works for a retina specialist and she said it takes a pretty good injury to scratch a cornea deeply. She said a child wouldn't be able to do that to himself with his fingernails unless he hit himself with an object. I would definitely demand to see cameras. The scratch obviously happened in their care so you should be reimbursed for it. Seems shady that they won't show you the camera footage at all. I agree with pulling him from there. Esp if it's only one day a week. I hope his eye heals quickly though. I know how painful something like that is.
Eta - I just read your comment. That wouldn't happen because of allergies either. Can you get a letter from the eye Dr?
Accidents happen, and fevers can spike quickly in kids with no obvious prior symptoms (ex: w a uti) BUT this seems shady to me. A cornea scratch hurts like hell. Even if he didn't tell them what happened he'd be displaying signs of eye pain (like holding his eye, redness etc.) I'm not buying their lack of explanation.
Stay on top of it and unless they give you more transparency, I'd rethink sending him there.
Sorry this happened
I didn't get any copies of papers. I definitely will in the future though.thanks for bringing that up. I am not sending him back there. My instinct tells me they are covering something up. Especially since my son was so specific in telling me his teacher got him ice for his boo boo. He keeps saying something about an airplane with scissors. The n.p. was telling me it sounds like he has an active imagination. She even said it could just be allergies ?. I am totally fine if they said this or that happened I get that things happen but for them to tell me multiple times his eye did not get injured is concerning. It was sooo bad! And I will threaten them with cps or legal action if they dont show me the footage. I think they are trying to protect themselves. Part of me wants to forget about this and just withdraw him but the other part of me wants to get to the bottom of it either way and see if they were intentionally heartless and would have just sent him home " sick" if I never went to the eye doctor he said he would still be in a lot of pain. My son was telling me he was seeing all the colors of the rainbow ?. I felt so helpless not knowing what was wrong with him.
I doubt they will pay for the medical bills. I would definitely find other daycare too. Kids are going to get hurt but the fact that they are trying to hide it and cover it up is very scary! I was a daycare teacher for a bit and kids got hurt almost daily just like at home. I would always be honest with the parents when they picked them up. Everyone always understood. Kids are kids. There’s no need to lie unless you are trying to hide something.
I'd probably go ahead and take him out of there, it doesn't seem like a good/safe place. I'd also demand to see the camera footage too, don't let this go! Get answers...Do you have extra copies of the paperwork that you signed? I'd look into and see what the contract was as for them not being held liable for injuries and reimbursements. I'd be pretty pissed off that they didn't tell me about the eye injury and only him having a fever. Please don't send him back there being that you said there was problems before.
My theory is that they either aren't watching the kids properly and another kid hurt your ds or for some reason they're covering the fact that another kid hurt your son. Either way they're both red flags, I'd definitely find another daycare and do not stop demanding that camera footage!
