Breast feeding help
Hi ladies I’m having a hard time with breast feeding and looking for some advice! My son turned 1 month old yesterday and since he was 2 days old has been constantly feeding every single day. It seems like he got stuck in cluster feeding. He’s on the boob for over an hour sometimes over 2 hours. He’ll fall asleep for a few minutes maybe 10-15 minutes and then wakes up and cries until he’s back on the boob. And it’s like this all day everyday. I went to a LC and my supply is fine she said I have enough milk coming in but he’s having a hard time latching on because I have small nipples so she has me using nipple shields. But even with the nipple shields he’s still nursing all day. I try giving him pacifiers after feeding him for a while and he won’t take it. I’m so exhausted and frustrated I don’t know what I’m doing wrong! I really want to keep breast feeding but not being able to even put him down for a few minutes to get a break is so hard. Has anyone been through this and have any advice?
I wish I had good advice but as long as your supply is fine, I would chalk it up to newborn behavior. Baby is most likely comfort nursing at times in addition to feeding. It will pass and the days will seem like a blur. It's tough but try to hang in there.
Once I noticed baby was comfort sucking, I would slip the paci in very gently to not break the sucking rhythm he had going. Still works like a charm at 10 months old.
I was in same situation during our first week, was exclusively breast feeding, getting exhausted, not getting enough sleep, had trouble latching, tried pumping and feeding with a syringe as we didn’t want him to get preference for bottles. But realized that it takes a long time to feed with syringe. I was against using formula or bottle feeding, but since last 2-3 days I dont get enough breadt milk by pumping. My breast’s leak a lot so supply is fine, but I need to keep my sanity so we decided to give him formula for couple of times. Now I am okay with feeding formula or pumped breast milk 2 times in 24 hours using bottle as it is faster. Gives me at least 4 hours of rest while hubby/mom feeds him. I am in better situation since I get some rest and he still constantly cluster feeds rest of the times. I have him falling asleep after 5-10 minutes of feeding using nipple shield, trying to wake him up, burp him, he takes a 15-20 min nap and wakes up hungry again. With this schedule he doesn’t even get to do tummy time or play a bit. I was a lot worried and frustrated first 2 weeks, but now talking to our public health nurses and my doctors, lactation consultants, I figured most babies go through this phase, which can last for weeks or months. So it is just getting enough rest and doing whatever to keep the baby fed.
I agree^^^
