I've always liked the Monsters Inc theme or dinosaurs theme for a boy nursery.

Dr Seuss, Travel theme, or nautical theme

I find it easier to pick a color scheme first and then find things that will go along with it.

Agree with pp, a travel theme with some vintage stuff would be so cute for a boys nursery.

I did a garage theme. Tools, oils pans, street signs, etc. I haven't seen another nursery like it except pinterest. His room is something he can grow into. Colors are navy, red, and grey.

We went with transportation (planes, trucks, hot air balloons) but our runner up theme was superhero!

I try to stay away from themes, mainly because with my second son we did a nautical theme and by his first birthday he was really in to Mickey Mouse. Nautical wasn't his interest at all, so I felt bad that his space wasn't really anything related to him. So for his first birthday we redid his room in Mickey Mouse which he loves. However, I felt like all the time and money I put in to his nursery was kind of a waste. This time I'll be doing more colors and a few accent pieces. I'll wait until he/she is a little older to decide a theme or maybe still no theme. Just keep base colors and add little pieces they like as their taste changes. So I'm not investing too much in to something so temporary. My older son likes dinosaurs and has since he was 1.5-2. I felt fine doing his room in dinosaurs because I don't see him losing interest anytime soon.

I found a seashell wreath at a craft fair a while back and it had no other place in my house but I just loved it. That decided the theme for me. I'll be going with under the sea boy or girl. I found a nice water colored blue and I want to get some wall stickers of undersea critters.

I agree with pp, stay away from themes. I particularly hate cartoon themes and things like that, besides the fact that they're overkilled you may have to redecorate the whole thing when your child grows older and starts liking certain characters that may not be what's in his room. Stick to colors and you'll have a beautiful nursery.

I agree with the pp . Find some color combinations you really like together and work from there . For instance , if you go to Home Depot or lowes or whatever you have near you and look at the color palettes... you can come up with some colors and base a beautiful room or area off of that . I always have loved the pottery born nautical look for boys . Whites , greys , blue. Maybe if you do that then you can base everything else . I have always done bedding last bc I never have done a theme , I find they grow out - well actually I've grown tired of them . I think it's cute for a week and then I'm over it lol . Basic combinations are great bc you can always buy extra goodies along the way
