As a parent...
How do you deal with hearing about child abuse and other horrible things in the world?
Don't ignore it people. Educate yourself. I thought I found the perfect husband wed never argued it anything. First fight we had he ended up chasing me while I was pregnant holding my son with a knife then he found us up the street he threw my 9 month old into the street and tried to stab me. Don't be stupid
As a teacher I make sure that I create a safe environment where my students will come to me for help. I also go out of my way to get to know what ppl label the "weird kids" or "loners". I do my best to try and get to know all my kids and I'm always watching for changes in their behaviors. Im not sure I could ever live with myself if something horrible happened to one of my students and I was just another teacher who didn't noticed or ignored all the signs. I had one student who was just an a****** , so mean to my aids refused to work bad was just plain rude. Most ppl had written him off and one day I caught him in the hallway and told him that if he ever needed to talk I was there for him. He opened up to me and I reached out to the school counselor and psychologist. Turned out he was severely depressed and suicidal. They got him treatment and was put on medication and he did so much better. The following year he would come back and visit me and eventually he moved schools I still wonder about him and hope he is still doing well.
I have a really hard time with it. Funny, I posted awhile ago about having a hard time reading a couple books somebody had loaned me that turned out to be about child abuse and death and almost everybody responded that I was overreacting. I'm relieved to see at least there's some people who find it hard to read that stuff too.
I hate it... that's why I trust very few people with my kids and all my children will be learning self defence from a young age...
I don't listen to the radio or tv much.... I feel like my emotions are a bit distant right now, so I don't sob over anything. But it does make me feel very sad...
I suppose when I hear heart breaking things, it just pushes me to help my kids never be victims of such things, I can't protect them in everything, but I can do my best to give them tools, and protect them where I can
Balance. I listen to good catholic radio and it makes a difference in my day. There’s a lot of bad in the world but also much good. Sometimes just hearing ONE caller call into a show and share how they went from being diagnosed with cancer or on the brink of losing their home or whatever, and then sharing how prayers or someone’s generosity helped them, is all it takes for me. I almost never watch the news now. Not just because of the negativity, but because of how dishonest and biased it has become.
I had to change job roles when ds1 was 2. I was working in public protection rehoming dangerous offenders. I read and saw some horrific things. Now I often come across horrid cases of abuse, neglect and somethings I can’t erase. I just hold my little ones a little bit tighter, keep them close and knowing I’m doing things to reduce and remove the risk to some helps. Doesn’t stop bad dreams and tears, counselling helps but putting them behind bars makes me feel better
Honestly a lot of times just the headline is all I read when it comes to stories of terrible things happening.
I donate to a NGO that builds schools in Central Asia and has been really successful in ensuring they have the local community’s support and so the schools flourish and girls who would have had no access to education get a chance. Since girls having an education is often the single largest factor in whether their future families are poverty stricken vs not, it has societal ramifications that will continue to help create a more equitable world.
Supporting organizations like that make me feel better, like I’m doing my part. I also make a conscious decision to engage when I hear problematic language or thoughts expressed (“she was asking for it”, “I’m gonna breed my non papered dog and sell puppies!”, “all these immigrants”, etc) and while I try to be respectful I make it crystal clear WHY those ideas are a problem. Sometimes people are open to it, sometimes not, but all I can do is not be silent.
I've got FB and whenever I seen something I didn't want in my feed, I'd unfollow the person but remained friends. I know there is bad s*** out there. I don't need to read about. I don't even need to know the stories to know its bad. I've always hated hearing about people/animals being abused. Especially minors, animals and the elderly. Its why I refuse to read it. My MIL always has to read it and tell everyone about it. My DH and I tell her to stop. She did say well if I have to know so do you. My DH said you choose to read it when you didn't have to, so stop. It did cause an argument.
I️ never click on trigger warnings. I️ do follow the news station on FB and occasionally see some horrifying headlines on my feed. I️ can’t read the articles. It’s heartbreaking. When I️ see them, I️ am depressed for the rest of the day. Then we have to go on. There’s nothing we can do to change the monsters that exist out there.
Where I work we had way to many cases lately. I absolutely hate when a child is allowed to go back to those situations.
