i almost smothered my baby:(
Oh my gosh last night I woke up to my DH waking me up. I fell asleep while holding my LO because she has hit a 6 week regression/fussy stage, needless to say she rolled out of my arms face down into our bed!! Oh my gosh. I don't bedshare girls and this hasn't happened to me before. I was so scared and cried at 4am because of the thought of losing her to such a mishap... I don't agree with bedsharing for this reason something terrible can happen. I'm just glad our baby had lungs strong enough to wake him up. I wish he would help more in the middle of the night to avoid such things like this. But I can't make excuses either.. She wouldn't sleep longer than 30 minutes in her bassinet so I finally just went to the living room and put her in the swing and finally got a few hours of rest..
We bed share with both of our kids; and gladly nothing like this ever occurred i would have died; i can't imagine how you feel; but baby only sleeps on my side of the bed about 12 inches away from me with a breathable bed guard on his side; maybe getting a bed guard will help so you can push baby out
My oldest is 9 and I'm still waiting for the day that motherhood isn't scary!! Especially when we feel like we made a mistake. But you can't dwell and have to forgive yourself. You are doing the best you can.
My confession - today was also one of my scariest mistakes. I had a Dr appt and lab work today that I took LO. In the middle I stopped to feed and burp him and then went on and finished my appts and went home. A couple miles down the road, I realized I never buckled him up in his car seat!! I had him unbuckled from when I fed him and then just put the seat in the car. I pulled over so fast. Luckily it was before I got on the interstate. I cried the whole way home with the thought of what could have happened! Geez...I keep telling myself it gets easier!
Yes something similar has happened to me! It totally freaked me out! After it happened I swore I would never bedshare or allow myself to fall asleep with him. It's just not worth it!
When my son was around 3 weeks old, I woke up in my recliner to him grunting. I apparently fell asleep while nursing, and was pushing down on his stomach in my sleep. I think I was dreaming. Thank goodness he was fine but it Totally freaked me out to know I wasn't in control .
With my third son, when he was a newborn I woke up to him rolling out of my arms in our bed, where I nursed him sitting up In bed at that time. Thank goodness he was swaddled, so he was pretty snug and secure, and he also rolled onto the bed, not off it.
These things happen, esp when we are so sleep deprived and up all night. And sometimes we can't help it ! We do the best we can and you're obviously a great mother to be taking all the precautions you can to prevent it in the future!
It’s terrifying I know, it happened to me once with my first son. I fell asleep holding him and he rolled in bed and luckily I woke up right when I felt him leave my arms. But it’s definitely a wake up call for all of us to make sure we’re using safe sleep practices for our baby regardless of where baby sleeps.
Bedsharing takes quite a bit of tweaks to figure out what works for you. I’ve bed shared with both boys since birth, not on purpose just out of necessity for all of us to get some much needed sleep, and I’m kind of more of an attachment parenting parent I guess lol I lay on my side and hold the baby in the crook of my arm all night. I don’t move at all and I always feel when he stirs even the slightest bit. No pillows or blankets near baby and baby or my arm is never propped or inclined on anything.
I’m glad your LO is okay! Accidents happen mama, and we all learn from them like mamas do ?
How scary! Don’t beat yourself up...this could happen to ANY mom!! I’ve fallen asleep several times while holding my baby. I actually think that’s a good reason to bed share though, because then when I’m tired I can just lay baby down without getting up. My husband has been sleeping in another room so that baby can sleep in bed with me. I lay her at an angle, with her feet towards me and her head towards the side of the bed. She’s on a safe, flat surface with no pillows or blankets around and I can rest easy because I can see and hear her. Her crib is in our room, but she sleeps so much better on the bed with me.
I’m so so so sorry you had that scare!! I do bed-share but always make sure he’s in a safe position and nothing around his face.
That said I didn’t personally make the mistake but SO came home one night after we fought because LO was screaming for hours and I was so tired and stressed out and he was gone with friends. So he comes home and I’m balling from lack of sleep and he takes LO and holds him in the recliner since I sleep on the couch with LO (started out because of csection recovery and stayed because of this). He normally always uses the boppy pillow so he’s secure in his lap but that night he didn’t. I fell asleep from exhaustion thinking everything was ok only to be woken up maybe 30 minutes later to a very muffled cry of our sons head wedged in between the recliner arm and my SO thank the dear lord he was looking out for our LO because he was face up and not hurt. I cried and cried and cried as I pulled him out because SO is a very heavy sleeper he wouldn’t wake up. It was by far the scariest moment of my life to think he could have been gone just like that only a few weeks old. I never have told SO about it because he would be an absolute wreck. He already wakes up in the middle of the night screaming where’s the baby I can’t bring myself to hurt him with the knowledge his worst fear almost came true. So now SO doesn’t hold him late at night and never without the boppy to secure him. He’s really good at letting me know he’s tired and can’t hold him anymore.
You’re not alone in having this accident happen no ones perfect and things happen. Thankfully for both yours and my situation the worst case didn’t occur.
See we never bedshare either for this exact reason! I just knocked put from pure exhaustion.
She is normally such a good sleeper! 4-5 stretches at night, feed, then another 3-4. But these past few days have been pain staking. I really needed the reassurance I'm not a bad mom.
Im testing the rock n play out now and so far it's a win! I got the automatic one and it is doing her well so far. Hopefully tonight it has the same effect. ?
Congrats on feeling like a new momma!! Sleep is a beautiful thing for sure.
Me and hubby never actually sleep if my sons in the bed, which is why we don’t bedshare because we are both so paranoid.
You’re not a bad mom, accidents happen. I hope baby does well in the rock n play! I’ve contemplated getting one and never did. My son doesn’t like his bassinet as much as the swing so he’s been sleeping in the swing a lot lately at nighttime.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. The 6 week regression will pass soon! My son will be 8 weeks this Friday (omgggggg didn’t realize he’s so dang old already) and after he hit 6 weeks he’s been sleeping way better at night. Last night he slept 5 hours straight ?? then another 3 ?????? I feel like a new woman today lol.
You’ll get though it! Just gotta tough it out a little longer.
So my baby is 8 weeks old and is thriving with weight gain each doctors visit. So here is my question: around 4-5 hours at night for sleep she wakes up every night and sucks on her thumb. (She finally this week likes it to soothe her during nap times) her eyes are still closed and she moves around and sucks it. I wake her to feed her. My question is should I just let it go? And see if she is just soothing herself to sleep? I don't want her to stave by morning if she sleep a couple of more hours...
Crating an old dog
My dog is 15 and she has been going to the bathroom in the house at night so we need to start crating her because I can't afford to keep replacing my floors. Tonight is night one and she won't be quiet!!! She just keeps barking and whining! She is going to wake up my kids. What can I do ladies?? I put her in the crate next to our other dog but I'm contemplating bringing her in our room. Do you think it will help? DH has allergies so our room is a no dog zone but I can't have ...
So we got in super late last night. Had to carry my daughter to bed.
She had the nerve to try and wake me up at 7:30am saying she wanted breakfast. Smh (She wanted me to fix her a spread)🙄
I told her to choose some cereal. I'll fix her a bowl. Of course there wasn't any cereal that she wanted today 😴
I told her spoiled ass to figure it out and I went back to sleep 😂🤣
She ate an eggo.
Her being up kicking at night in my belly is NOTHING compared to her waking & crying... lord I’m so sleepy 😩
TWW!!
2dpo and on the tww journey. Anyone on the same dpo or close? Haven't decided if I will test at 12dpo or just wait and see if she shows up!!
I'm sorry this happened to you - thankfully everyone is ok.
I feel I need to say that this didn't happen because of 'bed sharing' (which has been going on since time began!) but because you fell asleep holding baby. SO easily done when you're exhausted. No judgment here! X
For anyone spooked by this, there are some safe sleep guides for co-sleeping & bed sharing on line.
For bottle-feeders make sure daddy does his share so you can get some sleep!
For breastfeeders, lying down with baby in the nook of your arm to feed prevents you being able to roll onto baby & allows you to feed/doze at the same time safely X
