"I'm offended" vs thick skin
What do you think of everyone constantly saying "they're offended" ?
I think all of this "being offended" needs to be replaced with mutual respect.
You can live your life very different from how I live my life, and we can smile, wave to each other, and carry on a polite conversation. If you aren't stepping on my toes and I'm not stepping on your toes, all it well. As long as no one is getting hurt, who cares?
Now protests involving situations where innocent people get hurt, I understand and agree with the objective. I might not agree with the way the protest is being carried out, but that's a whole other thing.
Our generation is the first to have such convenient access to the internet. If you have a smartphone, you have a voice. I don't believe our generation is any more offended than the previous ones, we're just the first ones who are able to openly share each and every thought and opinion that comes to mind.
Yes, I think people get offended very easily, but I also think a lot of the issues that are being voiced out are important to talk about.
I, for one, am tired of older generations rolling their eyes at millennials simply because they're millennials. There are lazy asshats in every generation, but I agree that ours is the first truly spoiled, entitled generation.
All in all, I think the 'easily offended' issue has more to do with everyone being able to voice their opinions, and less to do with it being the millennials' fault.
@seryiously I was born a year after you and do not put myself in the millennial category either, despite what anyone else says. Like you I loved growing up in the 90s. Its beyond sad to see how disgraceful some of these younger ones are. The ones who act so entitled make the rest of us look bad. It ends up sounding like we're all like that when in fact its the opposite.
I'm almost 33 and considered a "millennial" but I refuse to even categorize myself as one. I was born in 1984 and I absolutely loved growing up in the 90's and see how pathetic this generation in this day and age. Everyone is sooo offended by everything and expects everything handed to them.
I've met easily offended people of all generations. I also met the 'I have a chip on my shoulder and the world owes me everything' people of all generations.
It comes down to now a days it seems no one can have different opinions without being shamed and slammed. No one can say something without it causing WW3. I personally love a good, clean difference of opinion debate. It seems either it's extreme on way or another. There seems to be no more middle. The middle ground to said "well okay I can see what you're saying but I still stick to what I feel". Leaving it at that and walking away.
Personally I try to stay away from debates now. When I was in my teens and early 20s I was always up for a debate. Some of my debates came from people my parents age. I sat with an ex bf dad for easily 2 to 3 hours debating about anything we could think of. At the end of it, we seen the other view and accepted the other persons views then we shook hands and walked away.
In terms of feelings..... I think buttholes need to stop going out of their way to hurt others BUT i think the ones who are getting offended need to realize that you're not going to agree with everyone and no one can bring you happiness but yourself.
When it comes to protesting... I support protesting against police brutality. I support protesting for women's rights and health. I do not support vandalism during protests or blocking the roads.
Just like i don't agree with participation trophies. What the point in winning if the loser gets rewarded.
There's a lot of grey area when it comes to answering your question.
I notice this on YouTube and it’s annoying as hell. People are quick to say animal abuse on lots of videos when the video has nothing to do with that. There’s a guy from South Africa that has 2 tigers he takes care of. He has a big enough house and backyard so it’s kind of like an animal sanctuary and people are quick to say animal abuse in his videos, let it back out in the wild, when he properly takes care of them and loves them. They love him right back and trust him, I don’t see what the problem is.
I don't understand your question because there are no specific examples of what circumstances you are referring to. Like do I see people crying because they spilled milk?-Nope. Do I see a lot of people protesting for equality/human rights that they feel they or others are not receiving?-Yup and rock on. I generally don't see millenials as easily offended, but maybe I'm missing something.
I think the millennial generation has the mindset of "if it doesn't impact my life, it doesn't matter to me", so instead of coming together as a community and fighting for the greater good, there are a bunch of individualized rants and very little gets accomplished because it just looks like whining.
Millennials were the first generation raised in the "everybody gets a trophy" mindset, so they're a group of people who have been taught from a very young age that their personal recognition is to be expected and demanded.
I don't think you can place all the blame for the perceived sensitivity all on the millenials-they were raised by boomers and Xers and are a direct result of those two generations-one of which wanted to let everything "trickle down" and the other that wanted to "rage against the machine". Those two ideas and their conflict with each other have created the current generation and need to be held accountable as well.
@waffles I'm not staying anything inpaticular just because that isn't what I'm addressing. I'm just honestly curious because to me it seems 50/50 on millennials either owning up to their responsibilities or trying to find someway it's someone else's fault/ responsibilities.
Im older and honestly I feel like no generation is that different than the prior one. We are all pretty damn dramatic, a little self absorbed and want to be validated in our teens and early 20s. Now there is social media it allows people to instantaneously toss out their random thoughts, to go off on people from the safety of our own homes or really where ever we are at the moment. Without the face to face confrontation people talk out their ass more. I will also add its bad for all of us.
When did social media become news. Seriously reporter's actually report what happened on social media and how many likes it got. Its ridiculous
I’m a millennial. I actually had this same conversation with my mom the other day lol
There are some actual worthy causes, but it’s the ridiculous “protests” over things that don’t impact some of us personally that really annoy me. It seems our generation has been taught to always get our way, and when we don’t we throw hissy fits. The world is NOT going to cater to our every want and need, it’s the honest truth.
I’m 22, and honestly I don’t agree with alot of things, but if it doesn’t impact me personally I don’t think it’s my place to say anything. I respect anybody’s decision and beliefs, simply because I believe if I want anyone to respect mine then I have to do the same for them. This is something alot of other millennials don’t understand, if they see somebody with a different belief system or a situation that goes against theirs, they believe they have to throw a fit until it gets “fixed” to their liking.
Sorry for the rant ? but this is exactly why I don’t watch the news anymore. Like I said, there are many worthy causes- but a lot aren’t.
What issues specifically are you talking about? And why do you think millennials are the problem?
I think a lot of the time millennials are our worst enemy. People say negative things about us, so we push to separate ourselves by criticizing our own generation (like this post). I do know a few people who fall into that milennial stereotype, but most people don't.
Sometimes people are rightfully offended and sometimes people are too sensitive. It's always been this way. We live in a 24 hour news/internet news world now so people have more of a platform to share their opinions.
I think it comes back to helicopter parenting. Parents protect their children to the point where the child never has to face any type of adversity. Then when these kids become adults, they’ve never had to deal with any of these tough emotions or situations and they just don’t know how to deal.
Unfortunately, everyone is not special. Not everyone deserves a trophy. You don’t deserve anything. And by that notion it’s not the world’s problem to keep protecting you and only say things that don’t hurt your feelings.
When you try to educate someone but they get offended 🙄 defensive.. passing along scientific fact isn't meant to offend just educate..
Advice needed!
I dont wish to offend anyone by asking this but..
I dont think it has anything to do with being a millennial. Theres older ladies that get offended by EVERYTHING ?. As well as the younger cry babies.
