Second opinion

Have any of you ladies ever gotten a second opinion? I just had an ultrasound yesterday that showed an empty sac. I met with the doctor today and she said she wants me to come in for a D&C next Wednesday. I asked her what I measured at in my ultrasound yesterday and she said 6weeks and my hcg yesterday was 45,000 but was adamant they would see more at this point. I’m just not sure how to go about getting a second opinion. Do I go to the same hospital and just a different doctor or go to another hospital all together? I’m not having any cramps or bleeding.

I just posted my story!!! But here it is again for you!

2 weeks ago, I was told by 2 doctors and the ultrasound tech that I had a blighted ovum and to go home and wait to miscarry.

I’ve never, ever been more devastated.

I asked for a repeat scan and my doctor refused saying it was “a waste of time and resources” and that I needed to “go home and accept it and wait to miscarry naturally”.

I begged for a referral to my local hospital and after 3 appointments, she finally referred me for a D&C.

The local hospital contacted me and said they were reluctant to book the D&C in until they were 100% sure because they couldn’t consciously make a decision.

They made me have bloods which showed they were rising (up to 56000 last time I was tested) but the OB did state that this was likely to happen with a blighted ovum as my body may still not have registered the pregnancy as non-viable.

I went in for an ultrasound yesterday and the tech wouldn’t let me see the screen or answer any questions, just kept telling me I had to wait until I saw the OB.

When I walked in, I was ready for the confirmation of non-viability but was totally shocked when she told me she had good news.

It was 100% not a blighted ovum as they could see a yolk sac AND a foetus!!!!!! They weren’t able to get a heartbeat though BUT they measured me at 6 weeks, which puts my due date back from 7th July to 30th July.

All my previous scans had shown no growth or very minimal. I had a scan 10 days previously dating me at 5w6d (when I should have been 7w4d) and in the space of 10 days, I was only dated 1 extra day but the OB said my sac had more than doubled in size and there was now the extra presence of yolk sac and foetus! So even with high HCG levels, they couldn’t see anything until yesterday!

She had booked me in for a repeat scan next week but she said everything looks great and there is absolutely no indication of a miscarriage and has officially said it was a “Misdiagnosed Miscarriage”!!!!!

There is another mama on here who went in for an ultra sound I believe at 6 weeks 3 days and saw an empty sac and then went in like a week later when they had planned to do d&c and baby was there with heartbeat! Get a second opinion. It would be a shame to have a viable pregnancy ruined because a doctor didn't allow you to wait long enough. Advocate for yourself momma some doctors are too focused on doing things in a quick turn over rate.

That was my second ultrasound which is why she said a D&C but if I was measuring 6 weeks at my second ultrasound I would have only been 4 weeks at my first one which they didn’t see anything at. So I feel like there’s still a little hope.

Definitely get a second opinion. The recommendation is a follow up ultrasound 2 weeks later. My doctor did one 6 days later and found a baby with a heartrate. The first scan at 6w 5d showed nothing. A big black hole, no yolk sac or fetal pole. My d & c was scheduled for monday.

I would get a second opinion.

My first miscarriage was a missed miscarriage. I went in at 8 weeks and everything was fine. There was a great heartbeat, measurements were great and my levels were normal.

I went back at about 11 weeks and they couldn’t find a heartbeat. I had absolutely no indication that anything was wrong. No bleeding. I still felt pregnant and everything, but the baby had stopped growing just a few days after the first US.

A day or two later I went to a private place where they normally do 3D ultrasounds. They confirmed that the baby had stopped growing and she said that she thought the miscarriage would start soon. I started bleeding and having contractions a few days later.

Whew, that went long but basically don’t let them pressure you into anything. Get a second opinion if you want. They could definitely be wrong as you are still very early. Don’t do a D&C at all if you don’t want to (unless it’s medically necessary of course). For me, letting the miscarriage happen at home was the best option.

My numbers have doubled perfectly. I know that doesn’t always mean much but I’m having no other symptoms of a miscarriage. My doctor isn’t happy but if it truly is a miscarriage it will happen on its own. She keeps telling me she wants to do the D&C to make sure that the pregnancy is what we are seeing my my uterus because I have a spot on my ovary and she’s worried that could be the pregnancy (I’ve been to the doctor multiple times for cysts on my ovary when not pregnant) I feel like I would have pain or cramping/bleeding if it was ectopic and truly growing on my ovary. I’m going to try to hold out until 9-10 weeks and get another US. Hoping for the best for us! ??

Sara I've been for my scan today and they've told me exactly the same. I need to prepare and wait for my miscarriage as there's still an empty sac. I should be right around 7 weeks. I'm going in for my final scan next Thursday then they're doing a medical intervention. I'm so sorry you're going through this, I'm in exactly the same position, feel free to message me.

I would definitely get a second opinion, I would want to be 100% sure before I did anything like that. I've had 2 blighted ovums and both times they tested my HCG twice to make sure it wasn't going up, my levels were dropping which confirmed it was a miscarriage. My levels never got that high though just around 6,000 also I was 12 weeks with one and 8 weeks with the other. I think 6 weeks is too early to tell for sure.

My doctor didn’t say anything about another ultrasound before the surgery. When I call to cancel it today I will ask. My husband can’t take off of work to take me so we might just wait it out until it happens naturally.

Also they do do an ultrasound prior to doing the d&c but it’s immediately before the procedure. I’ve had both a d&c (missed m/c at almost 8 weeks) and a d&e (blighted ovum) two different doctors did the procedures and did an ultrasound in the OR before doing the procedure to ensure findings were accurate.

Also an edit to my previous post my levels were in the mid 30 thousand range not mid 30’s range.

I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum in September of last year. Went in for my 6 week 2 day scan and only seen an empty gestational sac. I KNEW I should have seen more, and KNEW my dates weren’t off. I knew what an empty sac meant but was in denial. They wanted to rescan me in two weeks but I was in complete denial and refused to believe what was happening. My levels were super high (mid 30’s range) and I wasn’t cramping or bleeding and my symptoms were still strong. (The hormones were causing that) I decided to go to the hospital I delivered my two kids at for a second opinion. They scanned me there and low and behold I seen the exact same thing, an empty sac. I was forced at that point to face my reality but, even still didn’t want to believe it. I had two weeks to google nonstop and pray that my dates were off and pray for some kind of miracle. By the next scan I was numb to my reality so when I seen the larger empty gestational sac I blurted our while tears streamed down my face and still laying on the table “just book the fuc**ing d&c” I was so upset.

My advice is do what makes YOU feel better. This isn’t easy to deal with, and only you know what’s best for you. I’m sorry you have to go through this. If you want someone to talk to feel free to message me. Best of luck to you.

So sorry you're going through this. It's the worst feeling in the world. I'm definitely no expert but I read that if your hcg is higher than 10,800 you should expect to see a heart beat ? I still wouldn't get the procedure unless I knew with absolute certainty that it wasn't viable. They did a second scan for me just to make sure before scheduling a d&c. Do you have a GP that you can talk to? A different doctor may be able to provide some insight and make a recommendation.

Get a second opinion. At my 6 week and 5 day scan, there was a tiny looking spot that showed something had implanted but nothing else. Looked like a black spot on my uterus. An empty sac. They told me not to worry and had me come back two weeks later. At my 8 week and 5 days scan I was measuring a full week behind. Turns out I ovulated late and the original scan I really would have been 5 weeks and 5 days.

Get a second opinion, I've seen this many times before! I would be rescanned in 2 weeks and if then the results are still the same then I would discuss D&C

I just want to be 100% sure it is not a viable pregnancy before I go ahead with surgery. I just feel like if my gestational sac is only measuring 6 weeks that there’s a chance it’s still too early. I’m not cramping or spotting. But because the sac was empty she just automatically said I want you to come in, in a week from now for a D&C and they don’t do an ultrasound before it. I just feel like I would have so much regret if I didn’t get a second opinion but I don’t know where I would go to get one.

I had something similar happen to me in August, but my hospital said it was policy to wait two weeks, then have a rescan incase something develops. If you have doubts, get a second opinion x
