I've let baby cry out out a few times and two times she escalated and we had to rock her to sleep and one time she fell asleep on her own.
Often she'll be ok falling asleep on her own once she's full of milk but she will wake throughout the night wanting that soother or to sleep with us has helped. We've used the soother from day 1 only because I have a thumb sucking 6 year old and didn't want another...
On night's she's unwilling to go to bed on her own what I find works for her is putting the soother in her mouth and going back to check on her a few times to quickly put back in or she'll get herself all peeved off...she's fallen asleep best this way. Does Layla take to a soother?
She hates the vehicle and so she's cried/screamed while driving and theres not much I can do...I had to be to a funeral on time and so she cried it out for 10 minutes around that and then chilled looking out the window. So funny.
I have to make sure she is sleeping before I lay her in her crib. If not, she will cry. She's only ever fell asleep on her own, like 3 times lol I knew this would come back to bite me in the arse!!
Look for sleep cues as over tired babies are harder to settle. Can you use a dummy at all or does LO suck thumb .Everyone is different you just have to try what works , there are different methods times intervals etc, I used CIO with my daughter and she is now 6 an amazing sleeper with my Son he settles well with his dummy so I haven't had to consider. Everyone is different though, it's your choice when it feels right don't let others opinions put you off, I personally can't rock my baby to sleep I have a bad back so it's not an option . Good luck x
Everything I've read says 6 months but every baby is different. Miller has no sense of self soothing, some babies don't learn this till 6 months or later. I've let him cry a few times while I finished the dishes or finish my shower and he gets himself so worked up. The other day he cried for maybe 7 min and ended up coughing so hard he threw up. On the flip side I have a cousin who can lay her baby down (5 months) completely awake, he cries for 5 min top, calms himself down then is out like a light. You know Layla best!
Does she put herself to sleep when you first set her down for the night?
I think you would be okay to do a more gentle approach to cry it out. That's what I did when I felt Jack was ready to learn to fall asleep on his own for the night. I started with 3-5 minute intervals the first night. I'd go in and talk to him softly, rub his head or belly and tell him he can go to sleep, put the binky back in, kiss him and leave. I'd only stay in his room a minute at a time. He fell asleep within 20 minutes.
2nd night, same thing. But I went in at 5-7 minute intervals and he fell asleep in 15 minutes. And the 3rd night he fussed for 5 minutes and was out.
If he cried really, really hard the I would go in earlier and pick him up so he could calm down a bit. And now, if he wakes in the middle of the night and it's not time for a feeding, I just leave him be. I'll hear him kicking and talking, but eventually he puts himself back to sleep
I never did it with my first son, he is now 3 and ever since he turned 1 he hasn't had to rocked to sleep! We still do our bath, read a book and he goes to sleep! Sometimes my husband and I have to lay with him for a little bit! But we don't mind! The way I see it is, they are only little for so long and will only let you hold them and rock for so long too! I know it's hard and it's exhausting, but a year from now it'll be soo much different! Good luck you all you mommas ?
I need some help too! Parker puts himself back to sleep usually at night unless he's hungry, cold, etc. but it's the initial put down to bed. I try to put him down when he's drowsy and he wakes himself back up. I pick him up walk around for a few minutes and he knocks out. We put him down once and sleeps usually 45 minutes and then wakes up another fight to sleep and then he'll knock out for a few hours before he's hungry
How do I get out having to literally have him passed out to put him down 9 times out of 10
Do you rock until she's knocked out or just until she's asleep? Does she have a lovey or a paci? I don't think it's ever okay to let them cry it out in the traditional sense but having said that I do allow him 30 to 60 seconds of crying before I go to him. I've realized if he's going to soothe himself it'll be within that time frame. Another thing we did to break the rocking to sleep habit was putting him in his crib and since he's a side sleeper we would pat his back in a fast pace to put him to sleep. Slowly slowed down the parting to sleep and now he just lays on his side and sucks his thumb until he falls asleep. I think it's just a matter of helping her find her soothing mechanism.
I haven't had to try this with Jude yet lol and I do say yet. I started very early on laying him down while still awake, but he also wasn't a huge fan of being rocked to sleep or "put" to sleep. He very rarely falls asleep while nursing or drinking a bottle. I think it's a good thing if you're trying to break habits or get Layla to start self soothing. I recommend helping her to get sleepy and then laying her down. If you've already met her needs it's ok at this point for her to cry a bit. I would never say let her scream her head off for more than 10 mins, but crying a bit and then you settling her might help get her down. I'm sure that was zero help??? sorry. We're all having sleep issues ???
Yes, at bedtime. How do I break the habits of rocking to sleep? I need her to be able to self soothe herself to sleep, so she can fall back asleep, without me rocking her. I was told, ya just gotta put them in their crib, and they will cry until they fall asleep. Me personally, cant stand my baby crying, so I'm not sure if I can even do it! Lol
I don't think it's personally ever okay.
At 1yr I had to sleep train my son and it was brutal because at that time he was already used to sleeping in my bed, but it was helpful he was that age because he kinda understood bedtime .
Ant other time than bedtime and nap time though, I always try to tend to his needs. I'm his momma and I'm the person who he should trust the most!
Do you mean CIO for bedtime?
Shari no she doesn't take a soother or pacifier :(
I'm just not sure what to do to break the habit. She had bad reflux so after feeding her, we'd have to burp her and keep her upright for 20 minutes before laying her down. That's where the rocking comes into play. She still spits up but not as bad as it was. So we still gotta keep her upright after a feeding. Except now, I'll only do it for 10-15 minutes.
