No my insurance doesn't cover multiple visits with different doctors. Plus my family doctor also has a specialist.

Is there anyone you can see besides your family doctor? I know every family doctor is different, but mine only had a basic knowledge of pregnancy and was uncomfortable addressing any concerns or issues my OB had due to the greater knowledge base of the OB. I would hate for you to be out the money for that appointment when they may not be able to help you.

I have an appointment set up for next week for a second opinion with my family doctor, which is different than my obgyn. Thank you everyone for the advice on getting a second opinion and the people who told me some ways to get labor started. If everything looks good at my other doctor I will ask my doctor if I can wait for bub to come out on his own if he doesn't come before 40 weeks. If not then I'll get induced. Again thank you everyone, even the ones who thought I would willingly put my child in danger because I wouldn't do that. She's been pressuring me for an induction since my first appointment so I figured this was just another tactic. But I will get a second opinion and go from there!

@green no she never said it was a problem at 34 weeks. She was pointing it out like she does all the other stuff. She even said its normal to see it start to calcify at that gestational age. So I didn't think it was a problem because she never said it was.

If you read all the comments ginger then you would have seen that I took the advice to get a second opinion. I never said I was ignoring my doctors opinion. She told me I could go to 41 weeks she doesn't want me to go passed that. But she wants to induce at 40 weeks because she'll be in the hospital for 24 hours the day before my due date.

I didn't read all the comments but I just want to say, my doctor wouldn't induce me and my baby almost died because my placenta was so old. I went four weeks over due and his core snapped on the way out it was so brittle and he lost a lot of blood... please don't write it off as she just wants a c section. It's totally your decision but please get another opinion. It does happen and it CAN be a danger to baby. I know cause I could have lost mine xoxo

You said earlier "so you guys think I'll be okay then?" In reference to ignoring the advice of your physician. You are asking the women on this app for advice. You should never take the advice of ransom women over your physician. Get a second opinion, from a physician, and use that to form your judgement.

I have seen patients die from ignoring the advice of their physicians. Please don't make the same mistake. I'm not saying your doctor is right or wrong- but I am saying the women on this app have NO way of determining that.

The placenta ages rapidly after 40 weeks. This is likely why she would want to induce at 40 weeks if your placenta is already calcifying. As mentioned above, when my physician decided ds needed to be induced at 38 weeks above for his own safety, that's absolutely what I did. Sometimes out is safer than in, regardless of gestational age.

What are the risks associated with a calcified placenta?

@34 week she did mention to you about having a calcified placenta. Did she say then it was a issue?

If you dont trust her get a second opinion & tell her you will use her on call doctor to deliver.

Raspberry leaf tea, midwifes have a natural inducer that you put in a special smoothy, it's gross but it does work, also go for acupuncture, it triggers contractions, I had to go for it cause my water broke and 12 hrs later still no contractions, it got my contractions started and then I took the natural inducer. I really didn't want to be medically induced.

My question wasn't about whether I should listen to my doctor or not, it was how can I progress myself naturally before she tries to induce me. Everyone just assumed I was going against my doctor when I explained what her reasons were for inducing me. Thank you all for your advice, I'm taking each one into consideration.

It sound very suspicious of her, I wouldn't trust it...from what you said I don't like or trust that doctor.

Sound like scare tactics to me, I've known of doctors saying women need to be induced for there convenience....

My friend is a doula, and one of her clients, was having a normal healthy birth, she over heard the doctor talking to the nurse about

Inducing the lady because he didn't want to be late for his golf game...

He told the patient that the baby was in distress and that he needed to induce her ?

My friend told the lady they need "to pray about it", the doctor left and my friend told her what she over heard and they didn't induce, the doctor wasn't happy about it and tried scare tactics but the lady had a natural birth and had a healthy happy little girl.

That's just one story I have LOTS

Being friends with a doula I get lots.

She now uses that term lets pray about it as code to her clients if she needs to talk to them without the doctors and nurses.

Just cause they are doctors doesn't mean they always have you and the baby's best interest at heart... Sometimes you need to use your mama instincts, if your guts telling you she's full of sh!t,( which is what it really sounds like) then go to a different place and get proof of a second opinion.. Because your guts usually right.

Personally I'd wait for baby to be ready, I'd get a second opinion or wait tell she's gone on that trip and get a new doctor to look at me, and if the story's the same then I guess I'd have to get induced, but at least I'd have more confidence then in my old doctor.

Or it turns out she was full of sh!t and you saved yourself and the baby from having to be induced..... And your baby gets to come when he/she's ready to come... And have a normal healthy birth....❤️

She said it was normal for it to start aging at that time and didn't say anything bad about it. She didn't even mention it looking terribly older at 36 weeks. That's why I'm questioning it. She didn't seem worried about it at all until today

If it was already brought up at 34 weeks that your placenta was aging I guess I don't fully understand why you'd question it if it is being brought up again.

I'd listen to your doctors but that's just my opinion. I went into labor at 41 weeks, I was measuring 44. When I delivered ds he wasn't breathing they had to pound on his chest to resuscitate him. My placenta was almost dead.

Hmm well I'm not sure then. I understood it as, if it's aging, it gets to its top point earlier than 40 weeks which is why women get induced before 40 weeks. I got induced at exactly 39. That was the longest they felt comfortable waiting.

I was already scheduled for induction that night but because the sudden fluid drop had to go earlier around noon. Even if my fluid was normal they were still inducing.

See what the other doctor thinks of the placenta. It's good you're getting a second opinion and I hope even if you are induced, that everything is smooth for you!

Don't just make your own assumptions as to why she is inducing you. You want a straight answer, ask her. If she says he's at risk, it's better to be safe than sorry.

She said his fluid looks good, he's in position and has dropped. She said he looks healthy and perfectly fine. But she isn't trying to induce me until 40 weeks. But said I could go to 41 she just doesn't want me to.

I had that issue with my placenta and they induced me at 39 weeks but they found out about it like a month or a little over a month before then. I had to go in every week since to get an ultrasound to check the amniotic fluid level because it took a dip before when they discovered all this.

Point is, I think it might just be an excuse and I agree with the other girls. Get a second opinion.

Edit: there are levels (grades) of aged placenta. Let's say A, B, C, D (3 or 4 I forget) at 36/37 weeks my placenta should have been aged for those weeks at grade C, but it was aging quickly and was at grade D. A Grade D placenta is aged 39-40 weeks which is full term at the end of the line. It gets dangerous to let it go beyond 39 weeks because it starts cutting off nutrients and, what I read, oxygen and baby has a chance of dying from that.

That's why they recommend early induction to avoid that danger. The above is just an example by the way, don't quote me on the exact grades and the weeks that match them. I would read on it and familiarize yourself about the problem.

If you try to get a second opinion within the same office you will get the same answers. You would need to go outside that practice for a true second opinion

Right. It doesn't sound like he's in immediate danger. If anything it sounds more like precaution. But either way, we can't really say because we aren't her so we don't know the reason. I would just go for a second opinion to ease your mind. That way there is no more guessing or assuming.

So she is trying to schedule my induction two weeks from now. You would think if he was in that much danger she would schedule it sooner.

Everytime she has mentioned induction I have said I don't want to be unless medically necessary and she has said oh yes. The first time she mentioned it was because of the weather. That was at my first appointment. And I said the weather isn't a reason to be induced. At 34 weeks she said my son could born at 36 weeks so I stopped walking and putting too much stress on myself. I basically put myself on bed rest so he wouldn't come. And he didn't. She also said my placenta was starting to calcify which was normal. My last appointment she asked if dh and I wanted to start picking a date for him to be born in January if we didn't want to wait until February. I said we want to wait until he's ready to come on his own. "Ok great!" And I didn't have an ultrasound that time. Now this appointment she says she'll be at the hospital for 24 hours on feb 2 which is the day before my due date and she'd like for him to be induced then because she'll be able to deliver him for certain. She then says she'll be off on my actual due date. And I said again I will not be induced unless medically necessary and she starts saying oh your placenta looks so old. It's starting to get rings and such. And she made a joke asking if I've been smoking. I guess because it looked so old? And then says next week when you come in we can talk about inducing you on the second because I wouldn't want you to go over 41 weeks. But I'll just be becoming 40 weeks then.

Sounds like your doctor has been warning you about your placenta/induction for a long time now, from your last comment. I'm trying to put myself if your shoes and part of me feels like maybe she's trying to bully you, but the other part is saying that if she's mentioned this before (induction and your placenta issue) then maybe she's being honest and concerned. I know it sucks to have to go off plan, but maybe it's for the best. Only a specialist can tell you. Also, there are other ways to induce that don't involve pitocin, if you want to go that route.

And again my son isn't in any danger right now. Which is why I find it odd she wants to induce me based on her being off on my exact due date. She said she wouldn't want me going passed 41 weeks but would like to induce me before I'm even 40 weeks. And no this isn't dramatized. She had a student with her and I thought she was making this huge deal to show off to her after listening to her reasoning. That doesn't make since. I don't see your placinta doing that. My cousin was induced cause her doctor was going on vacation on her due date. Its not right

OP, you need to get a second opinion ASAP if you think she's doing this for her convenience. If there is truly something wrong with your placenta waiting around could be dangerous. Set up payment plans if for some reason your insurance won't cover the second opinion, but something needs to be done. We can't tell you if your doctor is lying for sure or not, but another doctor (preferably a specialist) will be able to let you know.

I would not schedule the induction until I got a second opinion from a mfm. There are risks with a calcified placenta and there are risks with inductions. I would want a second opinion to see which one has the greater benefit vs. risk in my personal case.

Listen to your doctor. I find it ridiculous you were more willing to listen to these women who you have no clue how educated they even are over your doctor. We can't say she's lying to you, unless someone here is an OBGYN and even if they were you can't prove it. Get a second opinion if you want but do it quick. Don't risk something like this.

I had to get induced with my son because my placenta was "aged" too. The baby stops getting the nutrients when its to aged I guess. So its safer to just get induced than to risk hurting your baby. I would listen to your doctor. But if there just telling you that to induce you be for they go out of town it would be pretty pissed and wouldn't want them to deliver me

It's too late for me to get another doctor. I'm only allowed one transfer and I already transferred to her. I'll see if the midwife in the office can give me a second opinion.

I would get a 2nd opinion asap. Like within the next few days if possible. Get their opinion and go from there. I would think if it was that serious of an issue she would send you to l&d, not wait a week to send you. But I wouldn't risk your LO potentially dying, I would Def just get a 2nd opinion before making a decision.

It sounds like she might be messing with you for her own gain. Get a second opinion so you can make an informed decision.

It depends on the state of your placenta honestly. She could be telling the truth and things are getting calcified the only way to know is get a second opinion.

I haven't ever heard of a baby dying because of a calcified placenta. And she's trying to plan it for when she's in the office. It's not a rush or anything. So it doesn't make sense why she would even say it.

I'm usually pretty keen on listen to the person with a medical degree when the word DIES comes up. If God forbid something bad happened, you would feel horrible listening to strangers on an app over an actual medical professional who has your charts and tests.

So you guys don't think he'll be at risk before 40 weeks?? Because that's what made me worry was she said he could die.

I feel like she's just trying to pressure me into one. I don't see a viable reason but when she said he could die I instantly flipped out.

If there were a legitimate problem with your placenta, she'd be advising you to deliver now- not planning an induction a week from now.

That's what I was wondering. She mentioned at 34 weeks that my placenta was starting to calcify but hasn't said anything about it until now. I had an ultrasound at 36 weeks and she said it looked great. Now two weeks later she's saying it looks terrible and that I should probably be induced when I mentioned I'm not going to do that unless medically necessary. She said he's in position already and facing the back like he should I'm just not progressing like she wants. I stopped walking when she said he could be born at 36 weeks. So I put myself on bed rest and it seemed to have worked. Now she's getting worried. I don't want to put my baby in harms way, he has great movement, last night I saw him practicing his breathing and everything. He is doing great. I just don't think that's enough of a reason to try to induce me. Pitocin is dangerous and could stress him out when he's not even stressed in there right now.

37 weeks is not full term. 37 weeks is early term and babies still have a lot of brain growth to do.

38 - 39 is term and 40 is full term.

If the placenta thing has never been mentioned before, I would be finding a second opinion. Shouldn't she be having you do NSTs twice a week for that?

I didn't see what her being off had to die with inducing me either. She was trying to say my cervix might not be competent and thought it was closed. It's not I'm dilated to a 2 already. And she had to change it to it would be risky that he would stop growing because of my placenta.

Why would you risk it ? If I had even the slightest indication my son would pass if I let him go over 40 weeks, there is no way I wouldn't listen. Anything after 37 weeks is considered full term.

Depends is it only because she is not going to be there on your due date heck no. I was induced because baby was not growing right, she had a better chance of growing outside but I was 37 weeks. Now I have heard about your placenta not providing properly for baby that is also and ok situation. But the fact that she won't be in on your due date sounds a bit fishy I say just refuse and wait for baby to be ready

I don't care about her being there lol she said she wants to induce me so that she can deliver me. I said I only will be induced if medically necessary and she said my placenta looks almost fully calcified and said I might need to be induced next week. I'm 38 weeks right now.

I'd get more info on the state of your placenta. If it really is in bad shape make a choice from there

Just read your comment... with your insurance would you be able to go and see a specialist or someone for a second opinion. I'd take that with a grain of salt because people do lie for their own benefit. Plenty of "emergency c-sections" preformed everyday without factual paperwork

I'm sure that the hospital your delivering at will have other doctors on call. With my daughter my Dr left the hospital to go to his private practice about 5 mins away and asked the nurses to call him when I was ready. I went from 6-10cm very quickly and wasn't waiting for him. Started pushing and another doctor and 5 interns came in and caught her. My Dr walked in when they were pushing the placenta. I went back this pregnancy because I loved the prenatal care and love I was shown throughout my pregnancy, but delivery wise a nurse will pretty much be with you the whole process. They just need someone to catch the baby. I wouldn't let my Dr going on vacation determine when my baby will come. Maybe you should talk to her about it
