My dr actually recommend getting whooping cough vaccine after baby was born. Said they could give it to me in hospital. Thinking that's what we'll do. This vaccine was never an issue when our first 2 were born (2002 and 2007). No reported cases in our county since 2013.

It's a fairly new thing, so do your research and talk to your doc. Here's some stuff I found:

If you go down to the section on tetanus, you'll see that they've been using it for years. I think it looked like the earliest safety studies for that were in the 50's. At the end there's a blurb about some lack of safety research for TDAP, however.

The main concern is in the last paragraph "With minimal safety data in humans available, there is currently a US study looking specifically at this issue. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is supporting a study examining the safety and immunogenicity of Tdap.5 Nonetheless, the US Food and Drug Administration has classified Tdap as a Class C drug.6 Such drugs lack adequate and well-controlled studies in humans but have been associated with an adverse effect on the fetus in animal reproduction studies. In reviewing the available literature, researchers have noted that “potential benefits may warrant use of the vaccine in pregnant women despite potential risks."

Considering this was from 2011, and new studies have been done to evaluate the safety, I'm not sure this is a major concern. However, the vaccine is still technically classified as a class C drug which means that "Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks"

It also looks like all the medical associations are recommending it (American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, and American Council of Obstetrics and Gynecology)

My doctor doesn't allow it during pregnancy, but I got it at the same time my daughter got her first hepatitis B shot. About 4 hours after I gave birth.

ETA: I also had the shot when I was 17 so it was still current.

48 women doesn't count as a study when it comes to the safety of something administered to millions. And unless they did tests on the unborn babies to see how their bodies handle the introduction of all of those ingredients, watched for neurological damage and for how it can affect fetal development... Then it has not been properly studied.

They only tested 48 women, that's nothing since there are over a billion pregnant women

I didn't want it while I was pregnant but as soon as I had him I got it in the hospital. I dont get vaccines when I'm pregnant.

I was going to get it if my Dr insisted, but the nurse told me most women don't get it again if their current vaccine is still valid.

I just had the shot 2.5 years ago.

I just got the shot this morning at my appointment. I rather give my baby a chance to fight against it until he gets his shot.

I got it done while pregnant. No side effects for me or baby. Pretty sure my second rhogam shot hurt more then that shot!

I didn't want to risk it.

Tdap HAS BEEN TESTED in pregnant women and HAS BEEN FOUND SAFE for mom and baby.

So far, it's only a theory that immunity gets passed to baby, it is not proven in any way. On the other hand, all those lovely chemicals do go into the blood stream which means they do get carried across the placenta and to the baby and you cannot see a reaction in the womb. Not to mention, introducing things like that to an unborn baby had not been studied, ever. The adverse effects are unknown. It's a false sense of security with a potential to harm the baby. It's never worth the risk IMO.

I'm getting Tdap and I already got the flu shot.

Getting the flu is more dangerous when you're pregnant. One of my midwives almost lost a pregnant mom because she got the flu. ? Plus it may protect LO from the flu before she can get her own shots.

I'm all about passing on immunity to the baby. When she's born she will be completely vulnerable to every disease. Every trip to the store could be life and death if she isn't immune to whooping cough. I'm not willing to risk my baby's life because the shot will make my arm hurt for a few days. ?

I told my midwife at my last appointment no shots until baby is born.

She simply agreed and moved on.

I refuse any vaccines durring pregnancy.

They gave it to me right after birth, but I really wish I had gotten it before he was born. I feel like he didn't get any of the good antibodies from my breastmilk.

This vaccine along with flu vaccine have warnings clearly written in the inserts saying they should not be administered to pregnant women.

I got it last pregnancy because I felt like I was doing the right thing and because there was a lot of whooping cough going around. Instant regret though because I felt like absolute crap and then researched deeper and realized how little testing had been done on pregnant women.

I got it after delivery.

I got it bc we knew we would be more likely to be exposed with a baby who needed weekly doctor visits for 3 months.

Turns out it was a good thing bc instead of staying in our city, we ended up in an airport flying to another province once a week.

It can highly depend on your personal situation and how you feel about vaccines. I am very pro vaccine but I wouldn't push a vaccine on someone who was pregnant. They are making the decision for themselves and baby.

They aren't giving you last years strain, they are giving you their "best guess" at what this years strain will be. I got it while pregnant, but I'm a registered nurse. I'm not sure I'd have gotten it if I wasn't a nurse.

The flu shot isn't actually necessary imo because they can't predict what strand is coming out every year. And they are just giving you last years and it might even be a different strand. My ob has been trying to get me to get the flu shot but I refused. I'm more worried about Tdap than the flu.

I got it. My arm hurt for a day. I massaged it & made sure to move it around.

I wasn't offered it until the day after my c section. I chose to get it.

I got the shot while pregnant. My OB said it will also help my LO build somewhat of an immunity to whooping cough. I figured better safe than sorry.

I chose to wait until after delivery. I got it about 5 minutes before being discharged.

I had TDaP and Flu shot while pregnant. Both highly recommended by my OB.

I took it. The only side effects I had was the injection site was swollen, tender and red for about two days after. I just want my baby to be protected as much as possible. I will also probably have the flu shot before I give birth

I refused it. My OB offered it to me at my last appointment and I said no. With my previous pregnancies I was offered again after I delivered.

I took it. I work with children and there has been an increase in whooping cough in my area. I personally just didn't want to take the risk.

The way my dr explained it was that women need one with every pregnancy. You are able to pass some of the antibodies along to the baby when they are too young to be vaccinated themselves. He also suggested everyone who was going to be around the baby a lot, definitely dh but also close family, nanny etc confirm they had one within the last 10 years. While a whopping cough outbrake isn't likely in most areas, it could happen in places where a lot of people don't vaccinate.

I did not get it while pregnant. With my first they didn't offer, with my second I denied it. I won't inject myself with anything while pregnant. Let alone something that is not tested on pregnant women, making us the test.

I got it, unfortunately whooping cough has made a comeback in my area and I had several infants in my area pass away shortly before my due date from whooping cough so I got it as did hubby and everyone who wanted to visit baby
