@kate the second cake (the actually birthday cake) I only left it maybe 10 mins while I cleaned up a bit! But I used far less icing this tester one was very sweet! X

Hey Hun I know this is a post from a while ago now but how long did you leave it in the fridge for the different layers of buttercream to set? I was thinking about 30 mins? Xx

@lowrjk yes just disposable flan trays. They were 7.5 inches. A six pack was £1 in Wilko! Saves washing up and can tear them if they struggle to come out.

I've not baked since I was a child so yes really easy. The packet mix I bought was 99p in Tesco. Can't be faffing with weights and measures!

Are the trays you used just disposable ones? Or were they proper baking tins. Also, could an amateur like myself do something like this? ? I'm desperate to get back into baking but never ventured outside of cheese cakes and cupcakes! It looks amazing btw! Xx

I cheated with the mix as didn't want to buy all the ingredients if it didn't work. Just used two packets of ready mix sponge from Tesco for 99p each. Added the water and egg like it said and split 6 ways. Added half a pea size blob of Wilton colouring paste and cooked. Made a normal buttercream and put between layers and round the outside. Will decorate their cake when done but this I left plain x
