My ex said something similar to me. He's the type who's a total sweetheart but makes jokes to deal with difficult situations.... Well, a little after we started dating I got hospitalised in an institute for about a week for a suicide attempt. Very touchy subject, lowest point of my life, but I'm better now. Well he always made jokes about it and it made me hate him just a little bit. I'm never a sensitive person but hearing jokes about something that humiliating was just too much. Jerk.

I hope he just didn't think that one through all the way instead of being serious. Either way he should apologize. I'm sorry for your loss though :(
