OS diapers from birth?
I have a 2 year old and we didn't start putting her in cloth diapers until she was about 6 months old. We have 30 bumGenius 4.0 and I'm hoping that she'll be potty trained before this baby comes in May. I'm having a friend redo all of the elastics on the diapers once my daughter is done using them and I was really hoping the new baby would be able to use the one size diapers from birth, since we don't have any newborn sized ones. I've been told that the newborn diapers only fit for babies 8 to 12 pounds. My daughter was almost 13 pounds by the time she was seven weeks old, so I don't really feel like it makes sense to go and buy a bunch of newborn diapers they will only use for a month or two. Were any of you able to put your newborn into one size cloth diapers right away? If not, what did you do? As much as I don't want to use disposables at all, that might be what we do if the baby doesn't fit into the one size diapers ?

Look up the newborn hack. I used disposables when mine was newborn bc I didn't know about it. But I know some people have great success with the newborn hack.

I'll look into that, thanks hun!

Flats and covers are a cheap way to make it from newborn skinny legged stage to your OS diapers, too. Flour sack towels at Walmart are a little less than a dollar each and make great flats

Oh nice! I was thinking about getting some BG Flips, how many covers do you think I would need for a newborn? When we first put my daughter in cloth at six months, a friend gave me some 4.0's and Flips to try and to see what I liked better. I definitely liked the pocket diapers better, but if I can use the Flips from birth I will gladly buy some of those until he/she can fit in the 4.o's! Also, do you know if the covers and prefolds can be used before the umbilical stump falls off? I'm wondering if I'll have the same for issues with the fit of the Flips as I would have with the pocket diapers

Flips covers aren't made for nb size babies. They didn't fit my daughter or my nephew until they were around 9 lbs.
Both of them were skinny babies though.
If you like the cotton babies brands, maybe look into the econobums nb size prefolds and covers?

I bought thirsties and bummis xsmall covers for my daughter and they worked well.
EDIT: The newborn hack that SarahS is talking about doesn't really work well with bumgenius or flips because of 2-snap tab system :(

Flips run huge! My son is 30lbs and still has lots of room in his flips.

We did disposables for the first 3 weeks, then used thirsties size 1 until she filled out the flips, at about 5 weeks. The thirsities fit her until she was about 5-6 months so I got more use out of them than the few weeks you'd get with nb. Size 2 thirsities are huge to me though!
