If they did get left out at night or when we left the house, they would definitely poop and pee but they never had an accident in the crate.

I use a big crate for our two dogs and they are great in it. Never have any accidents. I started out when they were puppies though and made sure they knew it was a safe spot. Sometimes they go in there even when the door is wide open and we're in the living room lol.

My kids managed to talk me into taking in a stray dog, she was terrified of the crate and would not go in her own, but she would follow our saint into his and cuddle up to him. They are best friends so using one has worked out great for us.

Everytime you lead them to it or put them in it, tell them what it is. If you want to call it their bed or crate or whatever, use that word everytime and they will eventually go to it on their own when you say. Also, don't leave them in there for long periods of time, except at night.

Try not to force them in as it could have a negative association. Use treats as pp mentioned. First little bit I wouldn't close the door either. If you can don't lock them in until they start to get comfortable. Then for short times but only if you leave the house or go to bed

We started with 2 crates but now we have just one and they are more comfortable going in together. First time they roomed together we told them to go to their crates and instead of separate they went to the same one and curled up lol

Yes u should definitely start crate training. The other poster gave u great advice. Leave the crates up and open all day long. And I would recommend getting a crate for each dog!!! It's going to be like their comfort zone. It's a safe place for them. Put their dog beds in it or some blankets so it's nice and comfy for them. Op hoe old are your dogs and what breed are they?? They might go into their crates no problem but they also may not. As the other person said before they go in show them u putting treats in the crate for them.

Leave the crates out. We had one gigantic crate for two dogs. They were buddies anytime we said "night night" they would go straight in.

Yes leave the crates out. Some will go in no problem and get the hint really fast some will be more hesitant. Usually the hesitant ones they say to do it slowly. So basically if you are leaving for like an hr. Put a few treats in there and put the dog in the crate

Close it up and see how he does while you are gone for that hour. Then go for longer and longer periods of time. Eventually they understand.

When it comes to when you're about to leave or go to bed just the simple command to get in and then lock it up should be fine.

Don't lock them in unless it's time to. Right before bed or you're leaving. If they are just hanging out and sleeping there then leaving it open is fine.

So I really should just leave them out all the time then.

Get one per dog. Think of it like a bedroom for them. You want them to know it's their safe place. You put blankets,pillows,bedding in them so they know it's their little home. When they know that then they will do their absolute best not to pee in it! Always keep them avaliable. No food or water in them. Also for then to be big enough for them to stand up, turn around and lay back down no bigger. Never punish them by putting them in it. Give them treats while in it so they associate it with good things. Eventually they'll start laying in it on their own because it's bed time.
